Can't view secure webpages
« on: April 11, 2007, 07:48:25 PM »
Using Windows XP PRO, and Internet Explorer 6, I get that stupid "Page Cannot Be Displayed" page when I try to access websites that I think may be encrypted...  Yahoo mail, online banking, Blockbuster account.  It did let me log into Computer Hope though!  All other websites work fine.  Just seems to be the secure ones.  I've tried everything that the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" page said, scoured Microsoft's support, ran CCleaner removed LOTS of files, and fixed several issues and still nothing.  After checking all the settings on this computer I can think of I started to believe it was a problem with Internet Explorer.  I then downloaded Morpheus and now I still have the same problem.  Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Norton Antivirus with the latest updates.  Service pack 2, with NO additional updates.  Started happening about a week and a half ago with no changes made.  Worked fine for as long as I can remember.  No new software.  No IE changes.  Have used Netscape (same problem) but have not tried Firefox.  Around the time of the mishap, I was messing around with another computer on the network, but it is now on the network, and I can use that computer to go to these secure webpages, even though it is using the shared dial-up connection from this computer.  Makes me believe it is something with Windows now.

Thank you,

The first thing you may want to do is go to Windows Update and download crtical updates for your operating system.  If you are running IE6, then you don't have all of the latest critical updates installed and this may be part of the problem.

What happened prior to this or did it never work correctly?

It had always worked fine.  I can not pinpoint whether this happened before or after messing with the network so I have just been assuming that it wasn't the problem, but then there is a chance I just didn't visit these certain websites for a while anyway.  Here's what I did...  This computer (the one with the problem) is on dial-up internet.  I hooked another computer onto the network a long time ago so I can share files, printers and internet.  I recently hooked up Ultra VNC, a watchdog program that basically allows me to tap into it and view the screen on this screen.  The only thing plugged into that computer is a power cord and an ethernet cable.  Now, on the computer with the problem, I did not have to install anything.  I just put a file (vncviewer.exe) on the computer and opened it so there is nothing to uninstall; another reason I doubted Ultra VNC as the culprit.  I also do not see any background processes running from Ultra VNC.  That would be the only thing done even close to the time of my mishap.

Installing updates from Microsoft is the last thing I want to do.  I do not trust them.  You'll never see me using Vista either.

I'm stumped,

High-priority updates are critical to the security and reliability of your computer.  If you choose not to download and install them, you are asking for trouble.

On that note...I'll let the other members here, at CH, help you.  GX1_Man is very capable of assisting you with your browser issue.

Am I correct in assuming that it is probably an issue with Windows somewhere?

As for the updates, I fear that instead of making me more secure, that they are making me less secure to access my files.  They're gonna do what they wanna do anyway but still.  If you have some spare time:  http://www.infowars.com

Less secure... more secure....  who knows.

Well, I have given up on finding a solution.  I couldn't take it anymore and just restored it.  I'm up and runnin' again.

Thanks for everyone's help.
