So installing a ZIP drive immediately
Nope. That's not what happened.
gives you 2 choices:
(1) live with your boot drive letter changing
(2) reinstall Windows?
Or am I missing something here?
Here's what happened:
He started over. Installed WinXP again. Computer had one floppy drive, one hard drive, two CD drives, and a Zip drive installed and connected at that time.
The hard drive was assigned drive letter F: and the Zip drive was assigned drive letter C: .
As I understand these folks here, the thing to do with XP is to install it with the minimal amount of extra stuff connected.
That is to say, one floppy drive, one hard drive and one CD drive. Second CD drive is ok... shouldn't cause problems.
But - leave the Zip drive disconnected until
afterWinXP is installed. Then connect it, install it, whatever.
Apparently this way, the hard drive will be assigned C: . The CD drives will be D: and E:. And later on, when the Zip drive is added, it will become F: .
Sure sounds like ZIP drives are a bad idea.
Personally, I think they are not such a good idea for other reasons.
Do a Google search for "click of death". You'll see what I mean.
It is not that they were always a bad thing. Just that their time is past.
CDs, CDRWs, external hard drives, USB flash drives .... heck, even RAID anymore .... are all other options.
My friend is dealing with inertia. "The boss" in their small business started using Zip disks years ago to back up and transport data to another office at home. It works, they are used to it, so they don't want to change.
It happens.
I was hoping that somebody here would comment specifically on some of those other methods in some of those links I posted. For all I know, they are complete BS. Or.... they might be spot on.
