He has two CD drives.   I see you are specifically excluding one during install.
Is that just to be on the safe side?
Or is it a known thing ...  a  no-no   to have two connected during XP install?

Lastly,   why more than one cold boot between connecting each device?    That's interesting.    You've made me curious.

2 CD drives should be no problem...i assumed more HDD's/partitions since the drive letters were running so high...

The multiple cold boot is a holdover for me. I have done it this way since i did dishes at the Last Supper...

It prevents the BIOS from getting confused as people are prone to just throw a bunch of devices into the mix at one time and then they can't figure out why the machine won't boot.

I guess i am a creature of habit after all.

If you change the Drives letters via the Management Console the references in the registry will still point to old drive letter. You cn either re-install with the ZIP drive disconnected or live with the Drive letter being what it is

So installing a ZIP drive immediately gives you 2 choices:

(1) live with your boot drive letter changing

(2) reinstall Windows?

Or am I missing something here?

Sure sounds like ZIP drives are a bad idea.

Accumulating methodology that works is understandable.
Thanks for clarifying.

There was a part that was overlooked:

I was unable to make this change in Win2K SP4 / WinXP SP2 or Vista RC2...

By which method(s)?

And...   specifically...   did you happen to try this one? :

So installing a ZIP drive immediately

Nope.   That's not what happened.

Here's what happened:
He started over.  Installed WinXP again.   Computer had one floppy drive, one hard drive, two  CD drives, and a Zip drive installed and connected at that time.
The hard drive was assigned drive letter F:   and the Zip drive was assigned drive letter C: .

As I understand these folks here,   the thing to do with XP is to install it with the minimal amount of extra stuff connected.
That is to say, one floppy drive,  one hard drive and one CD drive.    Second CD drive is ok... shouldn't cause problems.
But -  leave the Zip drive disconnected until afterWinXP is installed.   Then connect it, install it, whatever.
Apparently this way,   the hard drive will be assigned C: .     The CD drives will be D: and E:.     And later on,  when the Zip drive is added,  it will become F: .

Sure sounds like ZIP drives are a bad idea.

Personally,  I think they are not such a good idea for other reasons.
Do a Google search for  "click of death".    You'll see what I mean.

It is not that they were always a bad thing.    Just that their time is past.
CDs, CDRWs, external hard drives, USB flash drives .... heck, even RAID anymore ....  are all other options.

My friend is dealing with inertia.    "The boss" in their small business started using Zip disks years ago to back up and transport data to another office at home.     It works,  they are used to it,   so they don't want to change.
It happens.     :)

I was hoping that somebody here would comment specifically on some of those other methods in some of those links I posted.    For all I know,  they are complete BS.     Or.... they might be spot on.
