Slow Internet Explorer - need some help!
« on: April 24, 2007, 04:48:34 PM »
Hello there.  I'm having a bit of an issue with internet explorer.  Before I get into that, here's the system info thats relevant.  I'm using Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.0 (the latest version of 6.0).  Wireless connection with my linksys.

The problem is that I can be online and it works, then after a few hours, pages just don't load.  The internet works, but nothing loads.  I stay online on AIM, but when I go online, it just says "connecting to" and then the numbers in the bottom left corner.  I can fix this, but it's a pain to have to do it every few hours.  To fix it, I just right click on wireless connection and click repair, and then its good to go again perfectly fine for a few hours.

Any ideas on how to fix this?  There's no viruses, I use quite a few things to keep all that taken care of.  I havent downloaded anything recently, so its not as if there's new stuff taking up space.  I cleaned out the temporary files, didn't do it.  I know internet explorer 7 is out, but my school's website has issues with it so we were told to keep 6.  And I will not just get rid of it, I'm sorry, but I just don't like firefox, even if it is "better", so dont suggest that please.

Any ideas?  Or am I stuck clicking "repair" whenever its doing this?

How long has this been happening?
Try cleaning up with CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and see if that makes a difference.
You say you have XP, but is it SP2?
I'll admit, I don't like Firefox either, but for the heck of it, give it a try for a day or so.  Does the same thing happen?
You have protection, but what protection do you have?

Keep us updated.  With the given information, I suspect it may be an internet issue although other things seem to work with it.  Do you do any online gaming by any chance?

It just started happening about a week ago or so... give or take a few days.  No more than 2 weeks.  I do have XP SP2, and the protection is Norton Antivirus, internet security, ad aware and spycleaner.  And no settings in norton have been changed recently, so it's not an issue there.  CCleaner seems to do basically the same thing my Norton internet security does... so no help there.  And I will try Firefox, but I just reallly hate it.

Well, it's mainly just to see if the problem is limited to only IE or not.

Also, I'd suggest doing a search for AVG Free.  Download that, update it, and scan with it in Safe Mode.

Please don't run two antiviruses at the same time.

Well, the problem still happens with Firefox.  So is it the linksys then?  This is the only computer connected on the wireless network, and the one directly connected to the linksys doesn't seem to be having this problem.  I've unplugged everything that goes into both the linksys and the cable modem, plugged them in again, still nothing.  Hitting the little reset button on the linksys did nothing either.  This is frustrating and annoying as *censored*.

Go ahead and try AVG and see if that picks anything up.  And like GX1_Man says, don't run two anti-virus programs at once.  You'll need to temporarily disable Norton first.

You may need to give your internet provider a call and see what they have to say.

nothing on AVG... and yeah.  Norton runs on a schedule, its not running all the time.  Internet security is, but thats a bit different... i'll call the service provider... but is it an issue with them?  like i said, the computer the linksys is hooked up with seems to work fine all the time... so i don't know if its the isp or not.

At the moment, it's the only suggestion I can think of.  If it's not a problem with your ISP, at least we can eliminate that from the list of possibilities.  Personally, I don't have a lot of experience with linsys and networking and all that jazz, but there are others here who do, so maybe someone else will chime in.

Hi there, this could be a line issue mate. What can happen is if to many errors happen on the far end(your line) basically there is either noise on the line or the line has been configured to run at to higher speed. Call your ISP and get them to slow the line down just a fraction say 1mb, then ask them to run tests from their clt card. Then get them to ping your system say 150mbs worth of info and see how many errors appear on the line. Dont let them fob you off. Also get them to check to see if the noise on the line i.e voice is inturupting in to the broad band signal, is thats the case they need to raise the Db setting on the line. This may reduce speed slightly but will give you one heck of a steady connection.

Good luck.
