Computer deleted most stuff!

When i turned my computer off last, i had pictures, videos, work, music etc on my computer. When i turned my computer off and back on this morning all that had gone. My desktop background had reset. The only thing that remains is the program files. Office is asking for the cd again. I have a HP laptop. If anyone has any idea what has gone on id appreciate it a lot. I dont want to get it back to what it was and find it happens again when i turn it off.

Anyways...we need more info on your computer.

What OS are you using?
Did you install anything the night before?
Did your computer act weird the last time? (like slower or something)
Is your hard disk memory at almost 100%?

Yeah im the only one who uses the pc. The hard drive has gone back to using a 1/3 instead of 2/3.

Windows xp.

When i turned off last it moved all my videos and music. So itunes couldnt find it.

I thought that was strange.

Is your hard disk at almost 100% free memory and did you install anything recently?
Also, what kind of protection do you have (anti spyware/anti virus)

Its at 2/3 free memeory. No i havent installed anything recently that i think could do it. Im going reinstall to factory state. Its all gone anyway. That should fix the bug that has decided to delete all my work. My heart has sunk.

Have you tried doing a search for these files?  Have you had iTunes search for all music on the computer?
Can you access them in Safe Mode?
Is there a chance you maybe logged into a different account?

If you have the original disk, you might give a try at booting up with the disk and go to the SECOND repair option and let the disk repair the system. It will not harm any existing files. close to the end you'll have to enter your key, so write it down before starting.

Machines don't just delete stuff...
