Laptop only works with power supply

I cannot use my computer with out being plugged in to my power supply. A friend recently installed a new battery for me. Any suggestions for what the problem could be.

    Any safe way to check that out. How do I go about checking to see if battery is defective or installed wrong?

      Burly......How long will your laptop work on the battery ...?
      You could always take it to a good shop and have them look at it for you .
