    Recommended renaming utility for MP3's
    « on: May 01, 2007, 03:49:26 PM »
Can anybody recommend a free renaming utility for MP3's?  I have a bunch of MP3's that have the artist and album name as the folder name (see below).

    \Alabama
                   \In Pictures
                                      \track 01.mp3
                                      \track 02.mp3
                                      \track 03.mp3
    \Alice Cooper
                    \The Alice Cooper Show
                                      \track 01.mp3
                                      \track 02.mp3
                                      \track 03.mp3

I don't have the track name and don't really care about it.

It's not entirely clear to me what you're trying to do here.  Perhaps a bit more information?

If you want to rename a file, right-click on it, click on Rename, and type in a new name.

Run the files through Windows Media Player and allow it to 'find missing information on the Internet"?

I have 12 GB of MP3s.  I really don't want to manually label the tags for 150 artists, 479 albums, and 3500 songs.

None of the tags are filled out.  Will Windows Media Player still find the info?  Is it an automated process?

If WMP can't fill out the tags, I want to be able to take the folder information, which contains the artist and album, and change that into the file name.  If I can update the tags also, that would be a bonus.

I've been also playing with some batch files to rename the files.

I'm not too sure about it, I think it needs some reference. Not sure what.

      Why not write a batch file? I saw shifting through the computerhope.com batch files and came across something you might find useful;

          rename *.txt *.bak

Don't know how you could get it to do it in a sequential order, though. You should ask on the MS-DOS forum.

Yes, I was playing with the rename function.

I was hoping there would have been a renaming program already available.  I looked at a few programs yesterday.  One should have worked, it even did recursive folders, but it wasn't freeware.

I know that Irfanview can rename picture files.

You could batch rename ALL your MP3 files to  .jpg, run them through Irfanview and then batch rename them back to MP3..

But don't ask me what that'll do to file integrity!

You need a tool like ID3-TagIT (http://www.id3-tagit.de/english/index.htm).  It does exactly the sort of thing that you want to do and more.

Try out Media Monkey,iTunes or Real Player.

I prefer Media because it doesn't drain your resources and it's easy to use.

Does DBPowerAmp not have a feature that does this? Think you can do it in batch as well... been a while since I'v used it.
