Low maximum volume level when audio recording

I am, for the first time, trying to use the computer for audio recording.   It works, but the maximum sound level is pretty soft.  I've tried maxing out the volume controls both in the Control Panel audio dialog and in the recording software.   Is there a software fix?  If I need a pre-amplifier or a different mike, what should I get?

Particulars:
-3 year old HP Intel machine, WinXP Home.
- Realtek audio card
- Audacity recording software
- Sony ECM-MS907 mike

Are you recording directly from a microphone? Turn on the +20 decibel boost. It should be under the advanced sound recording settings.

Hi everyone,
This is my first post here.
I got the same problem and I did tick mic boost, without any result.
I am using Skype with this mic and I asked people, they all say that sound is OK.
When I started using it with all recording software I have including build in MS and camtasia, sound recording are very low. Before I go to check for new mic and maybe preamp, any suggestion?

I am sorry, my apologies.
I just checked again and for some reason boost wasn't ticked.
Now I have little background noise, I have to get rid off.
Could be mic. I will let you know as soon as I'll fix that.
