How can .docx file be converted to .doc?

I installed
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
When I try to convert any .DOCX file all the options give garbage charatcters.
What option should be used to do conversion?

Reading thru the Microsoft info led me to Microsoft Update. There were many (12) to be done. After the update WORD handles opening .DOCX files and even will save in .DOCX format.

Problem solved.
