Anyone know what the fan symbol on a laptop actually does when pressed?

Thats weird
I have never seen that on a laptop.

I suspect its for changing the fan speed.

Is it a function key, or something else?

Depends what laptop it's on.
I've only ever seen it on an Advent laptop, not sure what it does but the manual would tell you, as woud a visit to the manufacturer's site or a Google search.
My guess is that it controls the fan speed.
