    Disk Defrag problem
    « on: May 09, 2007, 12:54:35 AM »
When I run defrag it says it some files could not be defragmented see report for a list.
There are no items in the list portion of the results but in the stat portion it does say 1 file could not be defragmented.

There are still red bars in the display.

Ran ad-aware, spy-bot, avg. Rebooted and tried again with same results.
Haven't down loaded any new software and almost certain this ran fine after deleting Norton.

And just an FYI. It says I spelled defragmented wrong? Looks right to me. lol

    As usual thanks in advance.

    Peace,
    MP.

What is 'It' that says you spelled 'defragmented' wrong? It looks fine to me.

Maybe you need to run chkdsk on your hard drive to cure the unmovable file problem, or schedule a boot-time defrag.

The spell check is the "IT"

I did a chkdisk just last week when I uninstalled Norton but will try it again.

      Thanks.

How do you access the spell check? I can't find it.

I believe it is a firefox spell check.

I did a chkdsk and that did not work.

I also noticed something strange. There were actually 6 tasks performed. Between 3 and 4 there was a USN check. All 6 Tasks completed normally and at the end it said there are no problems with this disk.

        What do I try next.

        Thanks.

maybe the 1 file is your swap file. Is it pretty big?

I never heard of a USN check.

There is no file listed once the defrag completes. I'm not sure which file it is.

I've never seen or heard of USN either.

Now that I think about it the only thing that has changed is AVG 7.5 has a red flag about the license expiring.

You could DLoad and run Diskeeper Lite and use that...warning it will replace your Windows de-frag program until it is uninstalled...

                That didn't work.
Dloaded diskeeper lite, ran it all looked good. Uninstalled keeper , re-booted and ran defrag and the same problem occured.

                NEXT! lol

                Thanks anyway.

How did the DKLite defrag run ? ?

Are you sure it's an unmovable file and not the swapfile ? ?

Again if it's not causing an issue i would let it be....

DKLite ran fine. it said everything ran to completion and there were zero fragmented files. I uninstalled DKLite, rebooted and ran defrag only to have the same problem occur. I have no way of telling what file it is since is does not list it when defrag ends. I would just leave it but I have a feeling in the future it will haunt me as more files become fragmented. It only runs to about 12%.

                  Thanks.

                  12% of what exactly?

Defrag only runs to 12% completion before it aborts.
