I would think downloading music files is safe but if you download documents and zipped files or EXE's, those could give you viruses.

    Be careful what you download.
Limewire itself, if it's the real deal, does not contain viruses.
However, whatever you download may contain malware.
I'd advise against using it, but it's your call.

If you use it once and a while you can remove it from you firewall after you use it.
the next time it will just ask to accept it.
That way no one can access you files.

anandsinghin ...... As Calum has already stated, the limewire software is safe enough........  The problem is that because it is a P2P application and when you do a search for anything, it searches all the shared files of all of the machines that are online at the time you do your search........ So if you happen to select a d/l from a machine that is online and is infected, it is possible for your machine to become infected as well. Now after saying that, if you anti-virus is setup to scan all incoming downloads , the virus should be detected. I did some testing a while ago and found that the music was probably the safest thing to D/L.
There is also a feature that allows you to disable the file sharing.
(The best thing to do if you really wish to D/L music and it's not illegal in your country) would be to d/l it into your shared file ( that is by default where it is saved) and then do a manual virus and spyware scan before you open it and the move the d/l into another file.....and then delete the original file you d/l .

Make sure that it is legal to d/l music in your country........... and then proceed with caution. ........ or even better obtain your music from a legal scource.

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

Limewire is a safe program to download music and music ONLY. When you get results from the search you requested, usually the first ones are small files and some stupid files, such as (britney_gets_pranked), most WAV or WMV files are protected by a license which you will have to install before you are able to watch the video and usually use false names to get people to download those small videos. Stick to downloading MP3s as they the safest and the fastest to download. I leave all my downloaded files in shared folder and so far no one has downloaded any files, also I close limewire whenever I don't use it.

I had limewire thought it was the bees knees. I then got a virus so bad it scrubbed the whole of my computer, didn't know where it had come from but my brother had same virus 1 week earlier and he also has limewire.  We both scanned everything we downloaded and closed limewire when we wern't using it. I won't use it again but would love some tips on whats good to use off anyone.

Once again if you download the right files (ONLY mp3 pretty much), then you will not get a virus and as mentioned earlier by someone always run a virus scan of the files you just downloaded to make sure they don't have a virus. This way there is not a possible way you can get a virus unless you got it from the internet.

This is inaccurate at best...Are you saying you cannot be infected by DLoading MP3's ? ? ?

So we will probably be getting some new posters in the Virus Forum? Seems like there's never enough.

Personally, I've been downloading music for a long time now and I scan all my downloaded and received files with NOD32, so far I didn't get a single virus on my pc.

I really don't know but doesn't Limewire create a port so everyone can access you files.
It is a Peer to Peer program isn't it.

              Ports are not created ...
