Computer won't go past start up bar
« on: May 10, 2007, 08:55:35 PM »
I installed a service pack upgrade on Windows XP, or more of Windows did it for me but I went along with it and it restarted. All the sudden the loading bar where it has bars and space between them shows up and only fills up until the last 7 bars are so.

I tried starting in safe mode and using last known good configuration. Could this be a Windows error or a hardware error? Any help would be appreciated.

I had the Virus MS_EXP or something to that effect, it was on my third hard drive. I got rid of it, currently I have the Spy Sweeper virus protection.

ummmm that might be your problem..

if you install sp2 on a infected machine youll get problems

boot in safe mode and system restore to before you installed sp2 then come back

It won't even boot in Safe Mode. It freezes loading up.

What are you using for virus protection? Spy Sweeper is for spyware, but I wouldn't count on it for an antivirus.

What exactly did you load on there, and do you have a real Windows CD that says Microsoft all over it?

I didn't put a Cd in, it was an automatic update.

If it was just a security update and the machine will not boot you will need to get to the recovery console to rectify this.
If it was SP2 that would be a whole other issue and you will need the XP CD that says Microsoft all over it to be able to do a proper repair install of XP so as not to lose all your data...

Which of the 2 above cases apply here ? ?

It was some update but my computer won't boot from disk. I went in the BIOS and it has boot from Cd as the 1st option. How can I get it to boot from CD?

You seem to have a problem answering direct questions.
