Can connect to router, can't access internet.
« on: June 05, 2007, 04:53:08 PM »
I recently switched to DSL from Cable and have had problems with my wireless router since then.  The router shows up on the laptops, and they can connect to it with a good or excellent signal strength.  However, when I try to access the internet with any program it says I am not connected; unable to display page on browsers, no connection on games.

When I look at the status of the connection it will show many packets sent and very few received (about 5 or 6 times as many).  I've tried resetting both the modem and the router several times, and it hasn't given any results.

Go into the connections properties and set the DHCP server and the gateway to routers IP address.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

The properties of the router or the connection on the wireless computer?

Also, a desktop that is wired to the router can connect fine to the internet.

Are you sure your laptops are connecting to your network(router)? (and not a neighbour's?) Do you use the right SSID?
Can you access the desktop from the laptops? (do you have local network connectivity?)
2k_dummy told you about the tcp/ip properties of the wireless connection on the computer.

        How do you:

"set the DHCP server and the gateway to routers IP address."

I have been hunting for a long time to no avail, I really think this is my problem, having same problem as this guy.

        thanks

Double click "My computer", right click on "My network places" -> Properties -> right click on your network connection->Properties -> Internet Protocol -> Properties
and you should use: "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". The router should respond to your computer demands.

          To check if it works:
Start->Run-> ipconfig /all and if the IP is not in range 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254 then you have a dhcp server in your local network, and that server works. Well, we have to find if it is a legitimate dhcp server... But after you tell us what response you get from the command:
          ipconfig /all
