Computer shuts off, Please help (video)
« on: June 09, 2007, 01:24:06 AM »
My computer shuts off itself randomly. It shuts off most often while i am playing a game. Once a while it also shuts off when it is idle. When i try to turn it back on, it will only start for a second. If i unplug it for 5 minutes and then try to start it, it starts. Somehow I tried switching the voltage to 230v then back to 115 when i start it and it works SOMETIMES. Can someone tell me whats wrong?

I have a video of the problem, please watch it and help. Please thanks.

That is a nice computer you have there.

Did you make sure everything was connected properly? Also, is your computer very dusty or dirty?

Everything is connected properly. It is dust free. It also seem to shut off more during hot days since the fans spin faster and consume more energy. I am thinking it is the power supply. Anyone know whats the problem?

This is a crazy thing to do.

If your power supply wasn't bad before you did that, it may be now!

It may also be your computer is overheating...have you taken a look inside to see if the CPU fan is spinning while the computer is on?

Have you made any recent hardware changes...such as the installation of a new video card?

It could be a number of things. Replacing the power supply is a start.

Control Panl/System/Advanced/ Startup and Recovery...uncheck " auto restart on errors" which is on by default.
Re-boot. You will now instead get the wonderful BSOD instead of a restart.
Write down the complete error message and post it here...it will narrow down the possibilities of what the issue is.

That thing you mentioned, moving the voltage switch to 230v and then back to 115, that sure makes the power supply a big suspect. You can do all the software tricks and tweaks you like, if the hardware has a fault, it won't fix that.

I am very sure that it is a hardwares fault because i recently reformatted and rebuilt the system. Everything is set to default, no overclocking etc etc..I am just trying to find out which hardware is the problem. Also When I rebooted it does not show the BSOD

I am very sure that it is a hardwares fault because i recently reformatted and rebuilt the system.

Maybe that's a clue. When you say rebuilt the system, do you mean you changed or moved stuff like RAM modules, display cards, CPU etc? Maybe you should check these things over for being seated correctly etc, and give the whole inside of the case a good inspection.

In your BIOS, are the RAM and CPU voltages correct for your CPU? Undervolting the CPU, if taken too far, can give symptoms like that, but that's not really what I would suspect

You've reset the CMOS and set the BIOS to fail safe defaults (press delete key at boot time)?

No i just took everything out, and put them back in the same order(i was checking to see if i plugged my components right). Everything seem to be connected correctly.

It also shuts off when im in the CMOS setup sometimes. So basically it shuts off randomly at any time, when i sleep, playing games, minimizing a game, etc etc(shuts off most often when i play games like 70% chance)

RAM seated properly? A rash of failures after a rebuild... hmm... see my edits to my last post...

Could be informative to boot with minimum hardware... onboard video if present, cpu, 1 stick RAM, if OK add stuff until it goes flaky... (powering off each time!)

I even tried removing everything except the CPU and ram and it still wont start when it shuts off. When i say when it shuts off i meant what happened on my video;cant start it up once it shuts off(have to wait)

Iv'e ordered a 550W cooler master PSU yesterday and its on its way. If the problem still occurs, what might be the next hardware that is causing the problem?(hope it doesnt occur..)

the CPU should be fine since it never go over 50°C and its fan is always on..I forgot to mention that this problem never occurred the first 4 months that I built this computer.
