Swaping the power supply?
« on: June 10, 2007, 02:56:45 PM »
i have a 160watt power supply in my computer and was gutting one of my other computer cases and found a 430watt one. My question is can i just simply swap the 160 for the 430 and be on my way or is there more to it than that?

You need to determine what MBoard you have...sounds like an older one if the PSU is 160 Watts.

Newer MBoards require a 24 pin PSU but it will work in a 20 pin setup.

You should be fine.

Perhaps you can but, if you have a branded name computer.
Compaq,Gateway etc.....it may only use the type PSU provided
by the manufacturer. This is usually called Proprietary.

Of course patio may be correct too.Remember I have

don't connect Dell and other brand PSUs and motherboards together. The plugs will fit but they will fry!

Real good point contrex. That is why I mentioned Proprietary earlier.

Good to have a knowledgeable person like you keep me straight.

As far as I know, it's only Dell that does this. It is criminal in its spiteful stupidity and folly. To use the same connectors as ordinary hardware, but using different wiring, just to lock buyers in, and punish anyone who dares to use other equipment, without any warning whatsoever.

Shortsighted as well. I mean if i had cooked a Dell mobo by powering it up with a normal PSU, or the other way around, do you think I would go back to Dell ever again?

You have a good point there contrex.

I think some of this existed earlier with Compaq and Gateway.
Late 90's early 2000's.

Good many examples at below site. Really sucks don't it?
