I have a Motorola SBV5220 Modem that enables high speed Internet and digital telephone service with Cox Communications. I have a work notebook computer that now has software (VPN Broadband) that allows me to connect to my work Intranet.
However, it appears that I have to reboot the Modem each and every time to switch from my home PC to my work notebook (vice-versa) so that I can establish a new IP address.
I tried using IPCONFIG /RELEASE (it worked) but I keep receiving an error message when I try using IPCONFIG /RENEW at the DOS command prompt. The error message is: "An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: access is denied."
Rebooting the Modem each time isn't the end of the world (I use a toothpick to engage the reset button), but it takes my digital phone service offline for about 2 minutes or longer each time.
Cox Communications says that I have to install a Router to avoid having to reboot the modem each time.
Is there anything else to try so that I will not have to install a router? I have never used a router, but if I have to, will it significantly slowdown my Internet speed or cause other issues?
Thanks!
