Got a Hard drive question.
« on: June 28, 2007, 09:56:09 AM »
I'm trying to upgrade this computer with a new system. The old hard drive is IDE with win xp. The new system has a Sata drive. I try to boot up with the IDE drive only, but it tells me it won't.

Do I need to buy an adapter or something to get the IDE to work with the Sata in the new system?

or perhaps copy the files from the IDE to the sata drive first, then install it on the new system?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

ps motherboard is CeForce6100SM-M

Are you trying to use the same install as the old system or did you reinstall windows when you swapped the drive out?

That's what I was about to say, but you beat me to it.

Since you are trying to boot from a decive other than the original, have you changed the boot order in the BIOS.  That doesn't sound like the problem since you said it was unable to boot meaning it recognized the drive, but you never know.

make sure the jumpers on the IDE harddrive are set at Master,
is that where the operating system is installed?
Have you installed all the motherboard drivers from the cd you got with it ?

the SATA harddrive driver system does not require any jumpers.

sometimes if you have not done an XP reinstallation the SATA drivers will not be installed, There should have been a floppy with the Sata drivers in the motherboard pack,

you may have to do a repair installation to put the sata drivers into xp, early in the install it will stop and ask if you want to install sccsi or other devices, this is when the sata drivers floppy should be  put in the floppy drive the press f6 and the drivers will be installed.

other problems can happen if you put the SATA Drive connection into the SATA Raid connection on the motherboard. instead of the SATA
Please give as much information regarding the Specification and components of your computer and a note about what you were doing when the problem arose and any other relevant thing that you think may help.

What i was trying to do was use the IDE drive as master, reformat the new Sata, copy all the IDE content to Sata and go from there.

Do I have to reset bios for the IDE drive?

Or some sort of reconfiguration of the mobo?

You need to do a clean install of XP on the SATA drive...
Then introduce the old IDE drive into the system jumpered as slave to retrieve your data from it.
You can use Files and Settings transfer wizard for this.

You cannot copy the IDE to the SATA and expect it to boot in a different machine...you are only asking for headaches.

If it were going into the same system all you would need to do is hook up the SATA drive and use the software it shipped with to clone the IDE over to the SATA.

The obstacle here is you are going from one machine to another...
