« on: July 06, 2007, 10:19:21 PM »
Hello all, i just recently aquired a new pc, and have fine tuned it and everything. When I got it it had windows vista, but I didnt care for it so I erased the hard disk(used killdisk) and reprogrammed it with xp pro and updated with both sp1 and sp2.After I installed XP pro, it still showed me as having 222 gigs left. After I updated windows xp, and threw on a few programs that was on my old PC now it shows 111 gigs free. I know i have not stored or downloaded 139 gigs of space! My system is the following:
Processor type

HARD Disk
ST3250820AS (not sure the brand!)
250 gig

Now..my problem is HALF my hard disk is showing full.It says I only have 111 gig free.I dont see how it is possible, My old PC was an IBM 300pl supped up with a 20 gig drive and a 900mhz proccessor. I didnt even fill that hard disk, yet this one says I have filled over 125 gigs.I have cleaned the disk, defragmented, and it is not partitioned so its not being read as seperate drives. I tried a program that was supposed to tell me what my HD space was being used for, but all the numbers just still didnt add up.Any ideas?

I just tried sequoia view, it shows all my directories and free space, but I am still missing about 100 gigs of space. The free space it showed and all the directory sizes dont add up to 250 gig.It didnt show where the missing gigs are at, and my pc is reading the HD as 250 gigs, with 111 gigs free. I am still stumped..

System Restore and your swapfile probably account for the difference.
The amount used for System Restore can be adjusted in Control Panel/System/Advanced...

No, I run Avira antivirus. All the programs, all the personal files(music, pics, etc.) were the same exact ones on my old pc, which only had a 20 gig drive, and it only filled about 7 gigs. I used sequoia view(AWESOME PROGRAM!!) and figured up my used space. It cam up to around 8 gigs. It shows(on sequoia) my free space at 111 gigs, and my used space at around 8 gigs total, and thats it.Nothing else.Sequoia is only showing me about 119 gigs. My PC is showing a 250 gig HD, with 111 gigs free. I am missing 130 gigs! My pc is showing the 130 "lost" gigs as used, yet using nothing I have tried(even windows clean up, windows disk cleaner, and a few other disk tools I have) can I locate where it has gone.My pc shows the disk, just not what is taking the space.I have cleaned out all the cobwebs, even installation files, backups, unused regiistry files, everything.I am going crazy!!  :-\ Sorry it took so long, but I was out of town a few days ....and thanks patio!!!!!!!

Check the space being reserved for your recycle bin

Yes, Norton is notorious for being a resource hog.

Looks like it is turned off, when I right click indexing it says start(should I?), etc..,,my space for the recycling bin is set at 4 gigs...this is crazy!!! My PC is reading all 250 gigs, but for the likes of me I can not find out where the missing space is, or what is using it.It isreading the "lost " gigs as used, but I cant find out whats using it!!! I am not new at working on PC's, I am not a pro though, but I know enough that I should be able to find it! I have NEVER had this happen! The HD was wiped with killdisk, reformatted by windows, and when I installed XP it said(and still does) 250 gigs total, 111 gigs free.
And sequoia says I only have about 8 gigs used,111 free, and dont even show where or what happened to the other gigs! :-[  This isnt affecting my use of the pc, but I paid for 250 gigs, I would like to have them! Thanks again everyone,I really appreciate you all trying to help!!!!!

Drop to a command prompt, and run chkdsk on the drive that's missing space.  If you're not sure how to do this, click start, run, type "cmd" and hit enter, then once the window opens, type chkdsk c:  (or d: or e:, whatever the drive letter is where you're missing space.)  Let it do it's thing, it'll take a minute.  Once it's completed, look at where it says, "### KB in bad sectors."  It should be 0, or very close to it.  If it happens to report 111 gigs in bad sectors, congratulations, you've just hit the harddisk size limit in XP.  Don't worry though, this limit has been addressed in XP SP1 and beyond.  So why are you still seeing this?

Most likely what happened, is when you installed XP, half of your drive wasn't recognized because the original XP has a 137gig (or about that) limit on harddrives, it just don't know how to address any higher.  Everything else gets flagged as "bad sectors" on the disk.  Even though you updated to XP1, which fixed that little error, the sectors that were marked as bad never get cleared, so XP thinks that half of your harddrive is corrupt.  Don't worry though, it's not.  One thing you can do, if you can find it, is install from an XP cd that already comes with SP1 or SP2, and format your harddrive to clear the bad sector flags.  (Again, nothing is actually wrong with the harddrive, XP just doesn't know what to do with anything over 137 gigs.)  If you don't format, those bad sectors won't get cleared.

thanks Anodoin , I tried that, and I am happy to say it shows me as having 0 kb as bad sectors. But sad to say I still dont know where the missing  gigs are. I am honestly about to just give up and live with the ones I have. Thanks again everyone, this is a real nice site here.!!
