    SCSI questions

I have recently aquired a compaq proliant 3000 server that has an 8-disk hot swap bay in it.  I was wondering, does the circuitry on the carriage limit the speed of the bus?  Follow me if you will...

There's the wide ultra scsi card in there, connected to the harddrive tray, which originally had wide ultra scsi drives in it.  However, some of the drives have already been upgraded to wide ultra scsi3.  Can I simply swap the controller card for a wide ultra scsi3 card, since the drive carriage is a glorified ribbon cable?  Or is there actually something to the carriage that limits it's speed?
