problem in memory

i have a 256mb pc 2700 ddr memory and i added another 256mb pc 2700 ddr memory, but the problem is when i added it, my memory decrease into 96mb. what is the problem here? tnx

Pull your old memory module out and put the new one in the slot the old one was in.  Then, start your computer with just the new module in it.  Does it report 256MB?

also make sure that the memory is all the way in and the tabs on each side lock.
