Broadcom and Vista Networking Problem
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:50:51 PM »
Hi
I just bought a new Laptop with a Broadcom Wireless card with Windows Vista.

but I can't seem to connect to my home Wireless network. I see the network in the networks list, I enter the good WPE pass but when I click connect, I get this message -> Windows cannot connect to network.

I tried many times but I always get this message.. Can anybody help please.

Thanks in advance

Just to clarify are you talking about a WEP or WPA pass?

Also can you tell us the make and model of that laptop?
Have you tried to connect to any other wireless networks?
Do you have mac filtering enabled on your wireless network?

Mac filtering is a security feature that can be used to control what computers are allowed on the wireless network. This usually means that a list is made in the access point with the computers that are allowed on the network and then connection attempts from any other computer is rejected.

But first I think we should try and update the driver for your wireless network card. You didn't give me your model number so I can't find it for you. Your model number probably starts with DV or another two letter combination followed by some numbers.
Goto this page and input your model number in the search field.

Then download the newest drivers for your Broadcom card.

      Model : Broadcom 4321AG 802.11a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi Adapter

I found a Driver, Burned it to a CD then tried to install it on my laptop but it doesn't seem to change anything..

Okay... do you know how to access the configuration for your wireless access point? I.e. the place where you setup a password for the network and so on?

EDIT: Could you also post the make and model of your access point? It should be written on it somewhere.

Yes I know where to find the networks list. Theres 2-3 networks all password protected. Our own network is not broadcasting to I had to set it up manually.. But it wasnt working.. So we made a test and allow broadcasting of the network. Then it was showing in the networks list but I couldn't connect again. Its strange cause it was exactly like other networks.. When I choose a random network it asks me for the WEP key few seconds after.. When I select my network it doesnt even ask me for the Key and it automatically say : Windows cannot connect to Network.

Im not sure where to look.. But I am just using Broadcom default access point I think and HP WLAN is on.

By access point i meant the thing that creates the wireless network. Basically a box with antennas on somewhere in your house. :)

First: Sorry deerpark for interrupting I hope you don't mind.
When I select my network it doesn't even ask me for the Key and it automatically say : Windows cannot connect to Network.
This is because Vista saves The WEP of a network witch you already entered.
You can change this by going to the properties of that network and click most right tap there you will have a WEP key. you can enable that you can read what it saved. could be a good control.

By access point i meant the thing that creates the wireless network. Basically a box with antennas on somewhere in your house. :)
            Could be a router to.
The difference is that a router has Ethernet out to so you can connect true cable.
Please look at the thing whatever it is and tell us what make and model it is.
Hope this cleared up a bit.

            Jonas ;)

The router is U.S Robotics.. Not sure about the model I'll have to check..

But theres already 2 laptop (Windows XP) connected to this router (wireless)

I have also created a 'profile' for my connection. Tried with and without the connection but both aren't working.

Also removed the WEP key on Router but even with an open network I can't connect to Internet. All drivers are also up to date so I don't know what to do.

Well then the only thing I can think of right now that could cause this is if the mac filter is enabled. There should be something in the router configuration called MAC filter or MAC address authentication. It's probably with the other configuration options for the wireless network.

              Mac filter isn't enabled.
              Thanks for the help though.

              !!!

              Fixed it!

It was the Router Drivers that weren't to date.

              Thanks for the help anyway!

Oh off course I knew that but I didn't mentioned it.
                Now its to late.
                But its fixed so.
When the router drivers are older than the release date of Vista then you can't connect to it.

Jonas where have you heard that?
If that was the case there would be a lot of routers out there right now not functioning, including mine. Some routers may need an update to support newer netcards or support driver changes in Vista. But I doubt Vista it self is the problem since it is the netcard driver that makes the actual connection to the access point.
