Replacing USB port in Dell Latitude 600 laptop
    « on: July 20, 2007, 06:32:51 PM »
Since I've started to use flash drives and SD cards, I've been getting the message "This [hardware] could work faster; click here for more information."  When I click, Windows tells me I have a USB1 port and that no faster port is available on this computer.   How important is it to have a faster USB port?  Where could I get one?  Could I install it myself?  So far I have not encountered a really slow situation involving the use of USB devices, but I'm not sure whether I should be satisfied or not.  For info, this Dell has a Pentium III @ 851mhz with 256MB of RAM.  Any Comments/answers?

USB 2 is a lot faster than than USB 1. Especially with file transfers you should notice a significant difference. But you can't replace the USB ports in your laptop so your only option would be to a get a PCMCIA usb 2 card, like these.

This of course requires that your laptop have a pcmcia slot.

I have a slot that looks like the right thing, but I use it for my wireless card when I need that.  Is that the same thing?  If not, I guess I don't have the right slot.

Yeah that should be the same slot.

This is something a Computer shop should be able to do...

I have one of those card slot USB 2.0 thingys in the picture above, and it works great. But, if you have a wireless card sticking out of either of the slots, it won't fit.

What's the cost of one of those USB2 things that works in a slot?  Where's the best place to get one?  I don't use my wireless card much, so that would be a good alternative for me if it's not too expensive.

I got mine for pretty cheap, though I don't quite remeber how much. Go to www.pricewatch.com, and do a search for USB 2.0 PCMCIA.

Thanks to both Compguy and Patio for the info.  I now know I can afford the PCMCIA USB 2.0 device and where to get it.  I'm a happy camper.
