internet problems please help
« on: July 25, 2007, 07:45:22 AM »
So I just got a new isp. They sent me the router and all that stuff.

I have a router plugged into my phone line to receive the internet connection.

From that router I get a wireless signal that gives my parents laptop its connection, the laptop is fine.

From the same router I have an ethernet cable connected to my sisters PC and she gets a connection, thats fine.

But when It comes to my pc, I also have an ethernet cable going directly from the router to my pc just like my sisters set up, except my pc isn't connecting. It's all set up fine but I don't know what the problem is.
I go into control panel - network connections, and there is nothing there except an icon with the numbers 1364 or something like that. I know there should be an icon called (name of router) but it isn't there.

Is there something wrong with the ethernet cable, or something wrong with my pc?

P.S. About 6 months ago I had to take out a network card to put in a sound card as there wasn't any room left. At the time I didn't think the Network Card was needed as my old ISP was working fine. ( I had a modem connected directly to my pc via USB)

Do you need an network card for ethernet cables?

Yes you do need to plug the Ethernet cable into a network card.
Just out of curiosity, where are you plugging it in now?

Where is your ethernet cable plugged into if you have no network card?  :o ???

Does your motherboard have on-board LAN?

      Welcome to CHF!
You would need a networkcard otherwise you can't plug your cable.
It could be build in your mobo.
      What's your OS?
Did you try a other cable (maybe the one of your sister as you know for sure its working.)

Edit:Sorry I ignored the fact that there were already replies so there could be thing that I said twice.

Hi guys thanks for the replys

So it seems that the problem is I have no network card?  But I had no network card when I had my old ISP.  But that was via a usb cable connected directly to my modem.

This time it's an ethernet cable connected to the router which is connected to the phone line.  So what I need is a new network card?  I'll have a look on ebay.

And by the way my old network card was connected to the pci slots, and right now the ethernet cable is connected to the ethernet slot next to the usb slots on the back of my pc.  I opened up the pc and the ethernet slot just led to a small grey metal box which was attached to the motherboard, meaning the ethernet cable is nowhere near where the network card should be.

Then you don't need a new network card because your motherboard already got one built in. You probably just need to install a driver to make it work.
Can you tell us make and model of your computer?
Or at least the make and model of your motherboard.
Also what version of windows are you using?

I am running Windows XP and My PC is a HP Pavilion t650
Sorry I don't know the model of the motherboard.

So what your saying is I just need to install a driver?

That does make sense as I had to reformat my computer and restore to factory settings before I tried getting the internet running.

Well I can't guarantee installing the driver will fix it, but it's very likely.
Download the driver from here and follow the instructions on the page.

            ...

Might it be that the integrated NIC is disabled in bios too?

So I downloaded the driver, put it on a CD-R using my laptop, then popped the CD into my PC.

But my PC isn't reading the disc... it doesn't auto run, so I tried going into my computer, when I click on the CD there is nothing in there?  I've tried 3 different cd's and both the CD, and DVD drives on my pc but my pc still won't read the disc...anyone know why?

well after 1 and half hours I managed to get the file on a cd and onto my pc.  I ran the file and it did nothing.  I already had the updated drivers.

                   So that didn't work.

So I then went into my BIOS and checked the settings.

                  Onboard 1394 - [Enabled]
                  Onboard LAN - [Enabled]
                  Onboard LAN Boot ROM [Disabled]

I changed to last one to enabled, rebooted the computer, but it still doesn't work.

Are you sure that it isn't the cable??
If i was you I would try another one.

It's definetly not the cable as I tried the same cable on my sisters pc and it worked fine.

In Network Connections do you still only have a connection called 1394? How about device manager, does the network card show up there?

Nope, In network connections and device manager it's only the 1394 thing showing up.

And as I said way back in the first post, I took my network card and threw it away a while ago, which is why I was about to buy a new one from ebay until you guys said that if I have my ethernet cable plugged into my pc, I shouldn't need a new network card.

                        :(

In device manager do you see something called 'other devices' with a yellow question mark beside it? And is one of these devices called 'Ethernet Controller'?
If you do, you need to install the driver for this device like described on the HP page.
