***PLEASE*** Help me find a lost/hidden file.
    « on: August 04, 2007, 04:58:34 PM »
    Hi,

I need to find pornographic material that is deep in my Sony desktop PC.
(Purchased in late 2003) It has Windows XP. (Sorry, I am NOT computer savy) These files were originally found back in mid 2005, but
can no longer be found. (I thought they were spam, but after further knowledge,
I have found out they are NOT spam) They were strategically placed so they could
not be easily found. They were in yellow folders that were numbered, not named.
No one buy myself has had access to this PC so I know they have not been erased
or removed. I brought my PC to Best Buy to have the 'Geek Squad' have a peek but
they only open files that were in plain sight. (No help at all) I need these
pictures, files and websites for a court case. Because this matter contained
"Teen Porn", I will not allow my ex-husband see our 3 year old daughter. He says
he will not pay child support until he sees her. Anyway, what can you suggest I
do on a single, at home-mom budget with no child support? I do not have hundreds
of dollars to spend. Any and all suggestions will be very much appreciated.

    *A concerned mom*

    God bless & stay safe.

You might have problems finding the files, if the computer has been used for a while before they were deleted, but nevertheless:
    http://www.recuva.com/
    Free file recovery software.

If you really cant figure it out, dont use your computer, you are overwriting the files as we speak. You might want to find a file recovery business in your local area, call them first and find out how much it would cost to recover files that are not on a damaged disk, but have only been deleted from the recycle bin

(While you are at it, check the Recycle bin on your desktop)

They were not deleted. They are just very, very hard to locate. I have had friends who are more computer savey try to find them but they have no luck. The friend who found them, found them by accident after hours of searching. She has also moved very far away, so she can't help me. Best Buy found files that seemed very full but had a zipper on them. ??? They tried to open them but the PC said they needed a password. My friend found them without a password so I know they are visible without one. Any other easy advice I might be able to try???

      THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

"Back up what data you need"..... ?????

I do not know what data I need cause I can not locate any of it. As far as the format & clean install... I am not sure I want to clean install anything. Sounds like I may make stuff disappear forever.

I am not that technical, guys. Please bear with me.

Anyone else have any thoughts on how to find these files?

Double click 'My Computer' and then go to Tools>Folder Options>View ans select "Show hidden files and folders'. ok ok etc.
Then go to Start>Search>For files and folders and see if the files can be found.
          Do you know their names?

Yes MomNEEDShelp  try what Fed suggested. If you don't know the name of the files you can try and do searches for specific file types. You can try searches such as
"*.jpg", "*. bmp", "*.png" for different types of pictures.
Or "*.avi", "*.mpg", "*.mpeg", "*.wmv" for video. (note do the searches without the "".)

This way you'll probably get a lot of files so you'll need to look out for ones with suspicious names.

You could also try a pornography scanner like this one.
            http://www.contentpurity.com/scaninfo.htm

I have no idea how effective it is but it seemed like something worth trying.

Oh and ignore Zylstra and patio's advices. The guys usually give great advice but I think they've been infected with a virus (or maybe they just need sleep). :D

              Thanks Fed & Deerpark.

Before I try any of this, are you all sure I won't delete anything? Again, I am looking for yellow folders that are numbered, NOT named. (About 14 files with thousands of XXX pics)

Can anyone be sure the Contentpurity.com website will NOT erase anything??

Sorry, I do not know how/where to start to do searches by jpg, bmp, pmg. These deeply hidden files are not going to show up by just opening files. (I don't think) Best Buy geeks and friends have already tried.

I think I am going to be successful with you guys on my side.

Keep up the good work & please try to answer the above questions I have.

              Can't thank you all enough.

No Contentpurity.com will not erase anything, you can be sure of that because it's the erasing part they want you to pay for. But I just had a chance right now to try it out and actually I don't think it will do you much good. It stops after only scanning a small number of files and then want you to pay. So just skip this scanner.

Searching for files are not going to erase anything and I think you should try this method. You never know what others might have missed.
If you try a search make sure you select "all files and folders". And under "More advanced options" make sure "Search system folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" are checked.

Ok, Deerpark ....since you are so savey... :o)

Do I follow FEDS lead with:

Double click 'My Computer' and then go to Tools>Folder Options>View ans select "Show hidden files and folders'.
Then go to Start>Search>For files and folders and see if the files can be found.

Will I still be able to pull them up if the are not named?

If you don't know the name of the files/folders the best way to find them would be to search using file extensions. Just use *. and type in the file extensions. If these were files that were downloaded from a porn site, it would be a good bet that they are pictures or movies. Deerpark listed some file extensions in a previous post. If you set up your search to show all hidden files you should find something quite quickly. After all, it's a hard drive, not the proverbial needle-in-a- haystack.

                    Thanks Dave.

Can someone give me steps to get to the point where I can search for those files by extenisons?

(When I sviewed them, they looked like stamp size xxx pics probably from websites)

When I search thru these file extensions, how can I see the pics.....not just the address to it.

Tip: There are NO OTHER pics in this pc, if that helps anyone.

Right click on My Computer and choose Search. Choose "Picture Music and Video" under the "What do you want to search for?" on the left pane. Check Pictures and Photos" and/or "Videos". Click Search.

Download CCleaner and run the cleaning section of it to clean out your internet cache, this is probably where most of those files are.

Then try running the search again.

Did you look for hidden files also? I am not sure those file are on your computer. Because searching for sth is very straight forward and the suggestions given here are pretty enough to get what you may want. I am afraid they were cookies or temporary files and have been automatically deleted after some time.

Why not delete them? They are nothing important. Just crap that came with PC.

Yes, I checked the box SEARCH IN HIDDEN FILES. I found none of the porn.

If I am not mistaken, EVERYTHING is stored somewhere on the hard drive, meaning even if they were cookies or temp files, they would still be somewhere retrievable. Am I wrong?

Of course nobody who posts on here looks at pornography and/or tries to hide it from employer, teacher, partner or parents, so any guidance is bound to be strictly theoretical. Having said that, I can think of a number of strategies that a person might use to hide any sort of material. It is a good idea to protect credit card, bank account records, and if you work from home, employment and work related information, particularly if your work involves protecting client confidentiality. In that latter case, I would use pro-level encryption and firewalling.

In fact, I would state that any individual has the right to their privacy, as long as they are not breaking the law. I think this point is very important, so I am emphasising it. I might add that a person who stores "xxx porn", "gay porn" and "tranny porn" is not necessarily "sick" at all. So I am not 100% sure about all this. You make him sound awfully bad.

Here we appear to be talking about a partner hiding (possibly not illegal) *censored* stuff from a non-tech-savvy partner who knows you don't have vast sums of money to spend on professional data recovery.

Only a fool would store any such material in plain sight. By that I mean as visible and playable document, picture or video files. For example "bank account details.doc" or "credit card numbers.xls" or "sexy cheerleaders.mpg" or whatever. One pretty obvious first step would be to place it in a password protected zip or rar archive, as has apparently been done. However, it may be that the errant husband was not too clever, because from what I can gather, although the archives were password protected, the contents filenames listing would still have been visible, leading to knowledge of the type of material being hidden. In other words, he had neglected to encrypt the filenames. It's no good passwording a zip file if Mom can see that it's full of files like hotbikini001.jpg, even if she cannot extract or view them. If, in addition, the zip or rar file's extension has been altered or deleted, a double click in Windows won't even open it.  MomNEEDShelp, how did you know that this stuff was "teen porn"? It sounds like the "protection" was fairly basic if you (a) found the files (b) were able to tell what they contained.

So I would be searching for suspiciously large files with either no extension, or an unusual one. Maybe hidden files in a hidden partition. But I would not hold out a lot of hope of finding anything, especially if this guy could have had access to the computer since they were last viewed by you.

If I am not mistaken, EVERYTHING is stored somewhere on the hard drive, meaning even if they were cookies or temp files, they would still be somewhere retrievable. Am I wrong?

Files that have been deleted or placed in the recycle bin could well have been overwritten by other data. It is definitely not true that everything that ever happened on a computer is "there somewhere". Also, it is possible to set limits on temp and cookie storage space, so that when it becomes full, older stuff is automatically deleted. There are a number of such privacy settings that can be adjusted to make observation by others a difficult task.

Ok. Let me first say again that he has not been back since these XXX sites were viewed. I had a feeling he was up to no good when he walked out on me & the baby so I went over to his side of the PC. I just happened to open his FAVORITES and there were folders named by him and a few were TEEN HARDCORE PORN. I could care less what other porn he looked at. I know all guys do it. My fear is that we have a very young daughter. Ya see, even if the girls on the TEEN sites looked like they were 16-18, the fact of the matter is, he was purposely looking for porn of females who are young.  I need to see what kind of porn he was viewing. My goal is to protect my daughter. We all know looking at porn is not a crime, but again, I have a 3 year old girl that I love dearly.

My friend had found the 'missing'  folders once before without a password, but it took lots of clicking and searching. (Hours)
The page she found was a white page. On the white page was 3 columns of yellow folders. (Not zipped) They were only numbered, not named. The numbes were about 10 numbers long. (Example: 700033231) When you clicked on each of the folders, hundreds of 'stamp-size' photos came up. All were pornography.

For some odd reason, the links/folders in his favorites are NOW password protected. How can that happen, if again, he hasn't been here since I last saw it????

One last thing....... Best Buy found a large folder named QUARINTINE containing many other folders which were password protected. They are numbered files and say .zip after them.

Hopefully I have given alot of info so someone out there can help me. I do appreciate everyones help and I hope you can understand why this is so important to me.

                                    THANKS MUCH!!!!!

Well, I must confess that I had a thing for girls aged 16 to 18 myself. I thought they were very attractive, and I actually dated a number of girls in that age group. Of course, I was aged 16,17 and 18 at the time. I do not believe that makes me a pervert. Here in Europe we set the age of consent at 15 or 16. So he sounds like a normal guy. He has a normal  liking for young women. He is most likely no danger whatever to his daughter. I feel you are over reacting and/or looking for an excuse to punish him in some way.

                                    On another note:

                                    Good ol "Possible Causes' list:
                                    Male *censored* desires
                                    Pervertedness
                                    Law-abiding pornography sites
                                    or,
                                    VIRUS/NASTY ADWARE!

                                    Anyways, with that said:
Yes, it could be that your husband is perverted, but also take this into consideration:
Though it said "Teen", in the United States, you can be as young as 18 to be featured in *censored* content.
This being said, it would be legal. (And many pornography sites probably look for the youngest looking of the 18 year old crowd)
Thus, it would not be illegal, and probably not very perverted... or illegal, but certainly the whole idea or testosterone... and *censored* desire

But, it could also be adware or a virus on your computer. Viruses may edit your Favorites list to add more virus sites, and/or pornography and other related materials. It may also store inappropriate images on your computer, same as some sort of nasty adware

What virus and adware protection do you have on your computer?

(Plus, in my defense, my advice about deleted data being recovered wasnt that bad...)

Since I posted my rather pompus (I now feel) sermon, I have remembered that I once helped a friend clear out a lot of *censored* spam from his favorites, cookie folders, etc. He had been innocently surfing for game cheats and movie subtitles and his Internet Explorer got hijacked by dozens of pornographic popup ads, and his cookie folder was full of those little "stamp size" images, and his favorites folder had got absolutely jammed with items that were very explicitly titled, just like has been described, things that no sensible porn surfer would EVER leave for others to see. (Just guessing there, naturally.) His desktop had saucy shortcuts and there was even a "dialler" downloaded to hijack his (non-existent) dialup connection onto a $2.00 a minute scam number.

So it may not be as it seems, MomNEEDShelp.

Ok, I partially agree with the last few posts, challenging the OPs motives. Though I must say that it's getting a bit off topic and this is a computer forum, not a pornography or family guidance forum.

We do not know whether or not the father has responded to the allegations, we do not know for sure if there are illegal images which he has intentionally saved.

I am sure that the OP would have weighed up most of the factors, and they seem to have decided that the risk, based on the images outweighs any positives. They have decided to, i assume, claim full custody of the child, in some fear of molestation, or abuse?

@Shynnie, why do I feel that many of your posts are a bit, no offense, weird. We know some, or most, men view pornography but the OP feels that they have been obtained by intentionally searching for illegal / underage models. If this was indeed the case I personally have no problem with her choices. How can we judge, it's her life and she can take whatever measures she'd like, in order to ensure her and her daughter's safety.

I just sincerely hope that we have not aggravated the situation at hand and that MomNEEDShelp has not taken any offense, I hope for the best and that her problem is resolved in whatever way is seen fit.

I go on a lot of forums. Often I have seen people preface requests for help doing something a little "dubious", with a sad little story about e.g. how they installed a 30 day trial of Adobe Premiere and then their mother died, so they never used it in the 30 days, and now they need to use it to complete their college course so they can support their 8 brothers and sisters, two of whom are blind, etc, so could somebody "pleeeeeze" give them a crack, and after a while one gets a bit cynical about it all. No doubt many of the requests are genuine, but which ones?

Backup what data you need. format, and do a clean install.

Backup what data you need. format, and do a clean install.

I have no idea why this is not an option.

because she is looking to obtain data on the pc that she can use in a court case, not destroy all of the possible evidence that the pc might contain.

                                              Ok, let me add this....

I am sure the porn is NOT spam nor something he accidentally came across. How do I know this?? Because I checked his cookies. There are tons of web addresses, with dates and time stamps.

I hear you all that 16-18 is ok, but how do I know they were not 13 year olds? Is it not better to be safe than sorry????

Has this thread gotten way to deep? YES. I simply wanted help from someone with lots of PC knowledge to help me find hidden files. I gave a bit of the story to make it easier for someone to know how to assist me knowing what was hidden.

I don't know if any of you have young children and I am sure you are mostly men, but please understand I have nothing about YOU viewing porn. I am only concerned about the content of porn MY EX HUSBAND was viewing.

PLEASE, if you have an opinion about my situation, don't reply. I am here for PC support, not therapy.

Thanks in advance to any PC wizards who may still have an idea on how to find missing files.

Sorry. I forgot you paid a lot of money to come here and get this advice. Of course that gives you the right to rant at us. I'm so sorry, please forgive us!

Anyway, seriously -- have you given any thought to what you'll do if you find anything, especially if this thing might have legal significance? You would be better off taking your computer to a licensed forensic computer examiner, especially if you want whatever may be found to stand up in court. I don't think "I found this and my sicko husband put it there" is going to cut much ice with a judge, frankly, and might even work against you.

I must say that it's getting a bit off topic and this is a computer forum, not a pornography or family guidance forum.

                                                I am 100% in agreement.

I agree with contrex too. This is forum not a family affair discussion.

                                                Thanks

Why are you agreeing with contrex? You should be agreeing with me, seeing that I said that...

the OP feels that they have been obtained by intentionally searching for illegal / underage models. If this was indeed the case I personally have no problem with her choices.

Sixteen to eghteen is not "illegal" or "underage" in any country of the European Union, where I am proud to live.

Firstly, I never defined an age group. I clearly stated illegal, we do not know if the pictures are or not but again, the OP feels that it is best that they take action in order to in whatever way against whatever threat towards their daughter. Yes we can judge, but we are not in their shoes and do not know all the sides to the story, so we can not make a fully justified judgement.

                                                download this program:
                                                http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
It can scan the hard drive and undelete several different file types.
If you don't want to risk overwriting anything by installing the program follow this link:
                                                http://www.e-fense.com/helix/downloads.php
Using a different computer, download and burn one of the iso files to a cd.
Once you have the cd, boot the computer in question and once windows has started, insert the cd. Using this CD, you can actually find out a lot of information about the computer, even deleted materials.
However, if you find anything, it still may not hold any value in court because the jury wouldn't know for sure if you planted the images and/or videos on the computer. The best bet is to send it to a professional or to tell the  judge or your lawyer that there is evidence on the computer.

That's twice now that point has been made. It's no good just finding it, you have to do it the right way.

I am sorry. I did not think my last reply was considered yelling. (I am new here. No offence meant) I was simply stating that I need help finding hidden files. Maybe I should not have said why. I just thought stating the need would help someone know better where to help me look.

I thought there was a way to show time/date stamps on all files created. I also thought these things were not able to be edited.

I know I will need a professional to be able to use this in court, but if I could tell them where to look, the final cost would be less because they would have had to spend less hours searching.

My story is not that cut and dry. There is much more that does not need to be discussed here. I was just here for hidden file help.

My guess is there is no easy fix. I will have to wait till I have some extra money to hire a professional.

Thanks to all who have tried, I really appreciate it very much.

If you did find a whole bunch of files and then told a professional, he would still do a complete search of the computer.

Have you used your computer's search function?
What did you search for and what were the results?
Did you set your computer to show hidden files and folders?

But what did you type into the seach field?
Hopefully things like *.zip *.jpg *.gif and of course quarantine.
You should have received many results from these searches but it wouldn't take long to scroll through them looking for key file names like 3746365896.

I don't really care what the motives here are.  The guy's pictures probably weren't illegal.  If a judge determines that they are...great for your case.  If not...no harm done.

There isn't really a whole lot we can do from here, however, especially if anything is password protected.  I suggest you use the search function, like has been suggested above (look for *.rar in addition to zips).  You might also want to install Picasa, which will search for all pictures on your computer.  I think this is probably the best we can do for you.

I am sure the porn is NOT spam nor something he accidentally came across. How do I know this?? Because I checked his cookies. There are tons of web addresses, with dates and time stamps.
That actually doesn't mean anything, because the cookies could have been from advertisements.  You don't only get them from visiting a site.  But like I said, whether or not he actually did anything wrong isn't much of a concern to me.

This makes me think a second hard drive....which could be bought cheap.

Set it as master and don't use the one with evidence...Perhaps,maybe,
                                                        really,indeed,of course.
