Auto connect on bootup
« on: August 11, 2007, 11:22:07 AM »
My computer used to connect to the internet when I switched on.
Now it's stopped doing it and I have to connect manually.
How can I set it to auto connect again?

I'm running Windows XP and use Pipex Broadband

Thanks

I don't leave my computer on 24/7.

I switch it off at the end of the day.

Post the make/model of your modem and we can go from there, most have the ability to dial a connection when turned on.

Hi

It's a Thompson Speedtouch  330 and I'm with Pipex Broadband.

The word 'Alcatel' is included in my broadband connection status

Thanks

This is not possible with that modem, sorry.
Lots of people have had the same thing happen, myself included.

    Isn't this setup in IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections?
I'm stuck on dialup and have never used broadband but I thought broadband was 'always connected' without having to dial in as such.
    Broadband-->LAN-->Voodoo...  :D

Not so sure, it's been a while since I threw that Speedtouch in the bin and got a real modem.
As far as I recall though, no amount of messing around could get around the fact that when I wanted to connect, it dialed in to my broadband connection (if you call it that, that's what it said it was doing anyway).
It surprised me as well, I thought it was always connected but apparently not.
I know with the modem/router we have now, there are options for it to connect when asked (for example when a program that connects to the internet tries to connect) or automatically when it's turned on.
So in that sense, mine is always on, as a connection is made when the modem/router is switched on.
    I hope I'm making sense.

Who?  Me?  I never said a word.  Just some minor chortles, no laughing.
Seriously, I know the feeling, I was stuck on dialup for a long time - AOL dialup, too - for around a year after everyone I knew had got broadband.
