Windows Vista

I have a laptop here that belongs to a friend,it won't boot up anymore,just says "Windows failed to start" then takes you to recovery screen.No os is listed in box and I'm not sure which drivers it wants me to install for hard disk. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, of course what version of WIndows and what happened prior to this would be very important, as well as the make and model of laptop. Where is your friend during all of this?
