Microsoft: Next Version Of Windows Due In 2010
    « on: August 30, 2007, 02:06:48 PM »

Microsoft is beginning to discuss Windows 7, the internal code name for the next version of the Windows client, with select customers and partners.

With Windows Vista out the door and its first service pack on the way, Microsoft has begun to focus on the road map for the future of its flagship operating system. The details are still extremely skimpy, but the company is beginning to discuss Windows 7, which is Microsoft's internal code name for the next version of the Windows client, with select customers and partners.

Since Vista's release, Microsoft has been saying that the next version of Windows would appear significantly quicker than Vista did after XP's release. To that end, Microsoft is still on track. "Microsoft is scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year time frame, and then the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar," the company said in a statement. However, earlier statements by Microsoft execs had put Windows 7 on track for release in 2009, while doing the math on the latest statement puts Windows 7 more in the 2010 time frame.

The company has begun discussing plans for Windows 7 and other future Windows-related products with select enterprise customers and partners. The conversations first came to light after reports that Microsoft had discussed the next version of Windows at its annual sales conference, Microsoft Global Exchange, last week, a fact which Microsoft confirmed in an e-mail today.

According to Microsoft, customers of the company's Software Assurance plan, which provides buyers with upgrades and other enterprise services, are being specifically targeted with early information on Windows 7. As part of those discussions, Microsoft also is outlining the future of releases such as the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, which includes software tools like SoftGrid for desktop virtualization and Winternals' recovery software.

I heard that he didn't even say that.

I hope the new windows gets back to the basics with the control panel and other administrative stuff. I don't know why an OS would really need much more processor power or ram unless you're into heavy games or other graphic intensive operations. But given their track record, the new os will probably require 4gb of ram, 1gb video ram, and a 3ghz dual core cpu. Oh and 120gb hard drive space just for system files.
I hope microsoft takes the xp look and feel (or at least gives the option) and focuses on it's security and stability. Maybe after that a few extra features would be nice. And by features I don't mean complete changes to the gui. Maybe they should make the gui open source so everyone can make their own.

        My thoughts exactly.
Security, stability, performance - just what I want from an OS.

I just might do that!..... I told everyone I would wait at least until the first service pack for vista came out, but you've got a good point. Why not wait? I'm in no hurry to use vista. XP works great and is user friendly. Vista is too "dummy friendly".

Well you can skip vista but then you might also want to skip Windows 7 because 3 years later there might be a newer OS.
I don't think that it is a good Idea of Microsoft to create this much OS'.
Ok I can believe that some people might want some changes but why not give them the option to.
I believe that computer specialist are going to have a hard time if the OS' keeps changing ever 2 year.
Ok the basics are the same but when I work with Vista it takes Much more time because I have to search where I look for as most of the things are changed. (Only a bit but still)

Do you know what I'm trying to say??

At this point I would advice to skip Vista but the moment I hear the Windows is going to change there OS' every 2 year then I,...
Don't know it would just be silly.
An OS don't need new toolbars or new graphic interface they need to be secure, Stable, and as fast as possible with at leas as possible system specs.

Forgot to add this to my 1st post (found this in my  Maximum PC mag in a 1 paragraph column.*

             and I quote

" Windows 7 on the way
With Vista barely a household name, Microsoft is already heralding the coming of Windows 7 - the working title for the company's next major operating system- with a  TARGET   release date of 2010.  According to company officials , Microsoft is now all about frequent OS releases: a significantly overhauled OS every four years . The ultimate goal is to move users to an OS subscription model, thus  "annualing" software revenue.

We continually allow MS to stuff their crap down our throats, with a "yum-yum" attitude, blinded by their hype. Their desire to gain control of our individual machines, enabling or disabling our machines and/or software as they please, will come to fruition if individuals and corporate big wigs do not take the blinders off.

              Right.   That is why.

So it becomes -  Can they?
How can they stop buying the "new" version of whatever is out there?

Aren't they, and thus pretty much everyone,  caught in a cycle?    The software application authors want to sell their stuff,  so they write it to run on the 'newest', 'improved' system out there.  Eventually, they stop supporting the older systems, because it is not worth it to do so.
Microsoft too wants to sell its operating system,  so occasionally it comes out with a 'new' and 'improved' version.
And the cycle starts all over again.

The hardware manufacturers follow along.   Eventually they stop making components for older computers.

What's the cure?    I don't know,  -  if I did, I'd have more money than Gates.
:)        I'm just making an observation of how things seem to work.

Maybe the root problem is all the so-called marketing and salespeople out there.     :)       Ever seen anybody market something by advertising it as, "Hey, buy this.  It's the same ol' stuff we've been selling for years!".
Heck,   even toothpaste ads are always hyping 'new and improved!!'
