« on: November 27, 2004, 08:19:48 AM »
My flatmate wants to use my broadband connection to access the net on his computer which is in a different room from mine. Whats the easiest way to connect him as well my computer.

At the moment I use a speedtouch modem . I'm not really interested in wi fi.

What do i need to do this?

Cheers

The easiest way is a router and cat5 cable.

What sort of router?

Does this replace my modem?

Whats the maximum lenght I can run the cable as the distance is around 10 metres

An inexpensive 4 port router would do. They are available with and without wi-fi capability. Get one with the capability. It can be disabled if you don't want to use it, but will allow for future use (great for laptop).

Again, they are available as modem/router combinations. Since you already have a modem, I recommend a stand alone router. It would be a more flexable setup.

Make sure the second machine has a NIC connection. The 10 meters should not be a problem.
