What is on these burnt discs ? ?
Were they burned on the same machine ?
Which burning program ?
Were they finalised when burned ?

Have Office 2000, Typequick,Publisher, Don't know what machine was used to burn them or any other details only know I have had them for few years and that they used to work in my machine.

Do the dics work in another machine?
Could be they are just old and scratched, maybe?

Disk work in my old computer which runs windows 98 and is 64 ram, they are in excellent condition can't see any marks on them they also work in other computers this why I don't understand why I am having trouble. On a rare occassion they will work in my machine after many attempts.

Sounds like the lens is failing in the cd drive. Have you got a lens cleaner CD?

Not a problem... What we're here for  ;)

just wish I understood half of it
You'll get there. A lot of things learnt from computers is through making mistakes and solving them. That's how I learned things to start off with because I messed my PC up and had to figure out ways to fix it.

Welcome to ComputerHope though, I hope it helps you when you need it  ;D

If they were burnt with packet writing software so that they could be used like a giant floppy you will need to have the same software on your new computer to be able to read them.
Or something like that anyway. :D
In short I think we were all conned when burners first came out and that's why I'll always have a floppy drive.
Needless to say I rarely burn disks so every time it's an adventure but that's my understanding of it and I'm pretty sure it's right.
Perhaps there is a way to identify what software was used to burn them?

Sounds like the CD's were never finalized and left open for continual burning, which is why your old computer, that made them, can read them and your new one cant.  My suggestion, throw your computer out the window, that always helps me

I didn't burn the disks (don't Know how) They were done by computer repairer. they use to work in this machine.Don't think lens can be problem as it will read original disks.Cleaned it several times this morning put in burnt disk light flashes then goes out put in original disk and runs no trouble. At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot could it be something as simple as a box ticked or unticked telling machine not to read burnt disks

      Thanks again everyone

Dload and install ISOBuster[/u] and try it...if it is able to see the data then it's the CD's not being finalised...if it cannot see the data then the burner is shot and will need to be replaced.
