That stupid "access denied" error!!!
« on: September 29, 2007, 02:24:03 AM »
It hasn't been a good day for using my computer today.
First, AVG quit, even when reinstalling. Now, I can't turn on the PC Tools Firewall service. What next?

Alright, I'll get to the point.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.
I am logged into an account with administrator rights. Everytime I do one single thing, stupid Windows XP will tell me Access Denied. Nag nag nag nag.

Someone keeps changing my computers settings.
However, when I checked with Spybot S&D, nothing.

I have proper permissions. All Users have all permissions.
Full Control, I just can't get this laptop to work!

So what can I do?

I read MS's documents on how to set permissions, so should I grant full control to Everyone?

Thank you.

Compaq Presario M2000. I am the only user.

I don't have any viruses. Besides, I checked for viruses and spyware.
I might try to grant permissions to everyone.

How about trojans?  Can you actually state with absolute certainty that your computer is not infected?

I can state that my computer is not infected.

Now here is bad news. I created a new account and that didn't work either.
Basically, all I need to do is get my firewall running.

I know, Windows XP has an inbuilt firewall, but it is telling me that the "Group Policy" has changed.

And every time I turn on my computer, I get two warnings. One that the firewall is turned off, and the other asking me to install the same MS Updates. I had to turn off Automatic Update so I can reply without being asked to update every 5 minutes!

Alright this is getting weird.

I was reading the Saviour PC Forum Malware Guide, and it says to update my computer.

Now I recently visited the TweakHound website, and it had a quote from an MS-MVP.
The quote said you can clean your hard drive by removing the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. I was quite silly to do what it said, now I have a whole bunch of updates that I already installed!

Do I download and install them?
Are the updates in that folder I deleted?

It says Downloaded and Ready to Install

Let's see...

You were referred to the Malware Guide and decided to do something completely different...

As far as I know...there is nothing in that guide that says:

"Go to TweakHound...and clean your hard drive by removing the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder..."

Good luck!

Oh, sorry, I mean on a different article at TweakHound.
But I was reading the document you said.

Which one?
The personal classic

At this point I would like to say that I have reached my ISP's download allowance.

Then run whatever protection programs you have...in Safe Mode...
Then run Disk clean in Start /Programs/Accesories/System Tools.
Then run disk defrag from the same place
Then run chkdsk /r.

By then it will be next month and you should be able to DLoad again...

When I executed CHKDSK /R, it told me it cannot run while Windows is loaded. I told it to scan my computer on the next boot. After waiting 2 hours, it finally completed and said "An error has occurred".
