AVG Damaged... What now?
« on: October 02, 2007, 05:35:51 PM »
Hi,

I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.
I recently was updating AVG 7.5 Free Edition, and I received the following error:

Update was unsuccessful.
Can not initialize the update interface. Installation of AVG Free Edition is probably damaged. Please reinstall AVG Free Edition.

So I did just that.
After I tried to "reinstall" it, I received Error 5... again.

I don't think the firewall is causing any problem.
I have all permissions to services and files.
I am logged on as an Admin.

Hard Drive is not damaged.

So just what do I do now ??
Any idea?  ???

Have you tried downloading, installing and running CCleaner?

You may not want to install the Yahoo Toolbar that comes with it...untick the option to install it when installing CCleaner.

Here's a link to CCleaner:  http://www.ccleaner.com/

Update:
Uninstall AVG first...then...

Once you've ran CCleaner...for "Issues" and used the "RunCleaner"...

Try re-installing AVG.

Judging by these if this is the same machine i think you need to make sure that hard drive will run and do a clean install of everything...

Yes, but surely that will rely on services too, right? Because that is where "error 5" starts.

Services have what's known as dependencies...in other words even though you have disabled what you think you do not need it may affect another service that you do need...they rely on other services to run properly.
