Where is my kevlar vest???....LOL

BTW...a friend from my board with her Mac on broadband, without any tweaks (contrary to my connection), posted with 32.9 MBps download speed. Her upload is also faster, with 2.7MBps.
I don't know, if it has anything to do with Mac, but...

I heard with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of special equipment you can get it up to 4 gigs. Also I had to tweak mine just to get that 5.5 kb. At one point it was about 2 kb so I happy with what I have. Also my upload speed is about half a kb so I dont even bother .

I wonder how much porn she downloads per day because thats the only thing 40 gigs per second is good for.

No it's not... you could download every linux distro in just a few weeks with that kind of speed. Only thing slowing you down would be time for searching for every linux distro.
Actually, if she's like my grandma, she would probably download all of the Bill Gaither Albums and Billy Graham Sermons that exist.

I would download until I run out of space which would only take a few hours at that speed.

As for BB speed, there is really nice, free program (some of you probably know it) called TCPOptimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php). It really works. You can get probably 20% better speed when you allow it to make changes to your settings.
It's pretty straightforward...

My best download speed is as shown here. I have the Blueyonder (Virginmedia) 20 Mbit cable service. the max upload is 768k. The graph shows I have just started downloading some large files from a binary group on the Blueyonder news server. Blue is down and yellow is up.

I already have it about as fast as my dialup will go. :\  You have no idea how much tweaks I've made and how much internet accelerators I've used.

Contrex isn't VirginMedia offering a blistering wireless connection for Business users in that area ? ?
I seem to remember reading an article on that not too long ago...
If so what are the gritty details ? ?

Everyone knows your pain. We all started with dial-up some years ago. My first modem (1993) was just 14.4k, so you can imagine. Then I "improved" to 33.3k, then 56k.
Few years later (1998), I've heard, cable service (@Home) was coming to my area, when I saw it at my client house (he was one of the first people to get it), I was just shocked.
I couldn't wait to get it.
At the beginning, it was little bit painful, because they had a lot of downtimes, but I didn't care. It was just SOMETHING ELSE!!!

Dial up seems even slower to me than it really is because I use to have dsl which had a few hundred kb per second during downloads. Unfortunitly then I was to young to fully use it and now that I am old and smart enough to fully use it I'm stuck with dial up.

I hadn't heard of one, I do know they are offering a free wireless router to new 4 mbit and 20 mbit domestic customers in their cable areas.

Believe me, you really don't need to pay big bucks for it.
Those SOBs ISPs cap your broadband.
With my cable, I use have 3-4MBps (max).
After some router tricks, my download speed jumped up to 15-18MBps (I posted a screenshot above with 27MBps, but it was surely extraordinary...just to make some jealous...LOL).
I don't want to post any solutions in the open, but if you have a router, and you search fro "port forwarding", you are gonna be all set.

I think you are thinking of some DSL services. The British Virginmedia cable service gives you the speed it says on the can. They do "traffic management" between 4 PM and midnight - if I download more than 3.30 GB between 4 PM and midnight my 20 Mbit speed is cut to 5 Mbit for 2 hours. Apart from that, nothing to  restrict me. No need for illegal tricks. No downloaded data quantity caps at all. That's why I bought a 360 GB hard drive for Ł59.99 from Maplin, and why I'm wishing I'd spent the extra tenner for the 500 GB one.

No, I'm talking about cable ISPs, but I'm in US, and they all do capping.

There is nothing illegal in my tricks. I'm just exercising my options, my ISP won't tell me about, because, especially here in US, everyone wants money, but when it comes to proper service....that's another story.

For real.  The school district has spent a lot of money getting the network to be as good as it is.

Hmm, this is a first.  I used Lexington, KY as the test location and the download speed of 1500 Kbps is exactly what my DSL is rated for; so, it's 100%.

I run a speed test every so often and this has never happened.  I usually use a test site in Toledo, Ohio, from dslreports.com; I live in central Ohio.  That location has, up to this point, given me the best results of any test sites.  So, I'm skeptical about the accuracy of the above test.

From all my previous tests, 1447 Kbps download is about the best I've gotten and the results from the Toledo location are fairly consistent, usually getting 1440 - 1447 Kbps.  Getting 100% is really not likely to happen unless you're very close to the nearest "central office" of your telecommunications provider.  So, again, I'm skeptical about the accuracy of this test.

Edit: Cincinnati is the preferred test location for my area, per speedtest.net.

                Why? Is it a virus?

I don't think it's a virus.  But, what does it have to do with AVG?  It just seems a bit odd to me to use an image which appears to be a link to AVG but actually link it to some other site.

It depends what your ISP promises are...

I contacted rr. I am running about 4% less than advertised speed on upload and download.

I switched recently from Comcast 25M/5M Performance for $79.95 a month to Comcast 6M/1M Performance Starter for $49.95 to save $30 a month.

They also have a package for 3M/768k for $34.95 a month, but at any given time we can have VoIP Telephone going, + 2 streams of Netflix + online gaming and 6mbps download with 1mbps upload is pretty much the bare minimum that this will work on without buffering etc. ( We did away with Cable TV since its a waste with nothing good on and anything good is in the expensive packages, and we just dont watch TV when we can watch anything we want to watch just about on demand at one of many computers in our home as well as through out streaming blu-ray player or PS3 that plays netflix to TV etc )

I ended up flashing my D-Link Router with DD-WRT to highly configure and prioritize my bandwidth so that telephone always has a priority of 1 mbps/500k when active leaving the rest of the devices with 5 mpbs/500k and it works well. Without QoS the telephone acts up or gets choppy voice when everything else is competing for bandwidth.

I wish I could go to the cheapest plan, but 3mbps/768k just isnt enough for it all.

Curious .... why is your download speed lesser than your upload? I have never seen a configuration that way before?

Do you have download throttled in some way?

My internet speed changed some, I went with a 5/1 package for bandwidth to save money per month and then they gave me a free upgrade to 25/1 at a cost of $45 a month.

Keep in mind you are relying on outside servers for the test...
I usually run 3 on the same server...then average out the speeds...

                                But thats just me.
