Can we get more info about your computer?  What operating system are you using?  Have you made any hardware/software changes prior to the hard drive going missing?

Look in Device Manager under Disk Drives, also see if you have the driver loaded under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers...You might start there? Does it it boot up with the 2cd drive loaded,  but then other times it is not? Also "kbm292". need alot more info to help you

I can see it via the 'Disk Management' screen but it still does not appear in 'My Computer'. I did notice that when i recently ran my anti virus it picked up a trojan virus that seemed to be on my missing hard drive...the problem was the anti virus software (AVG free) could not delete it. Since then i have deleted AVG and installed Nortons Antivirus 2007...but when i run it, it does'nt find the missing drive and therefore cannot locate and delete the virus!!!

Can you answer this?  I noticed you said you just installed Norton.  So that's one change.  In disk management what does it say is the status of the disk?  Does it still say healthy?

CIH virus is able to cause it.
        Read here: http://www.grc.com/cih.htm
They have a free tool to fix it, IF that's the cause, but worth to try...
