    download problems
    « on: October 14, 2007, 08:53:12 PM »
I've been having a download problem for the past couple of weeks now. Every time I download anything the file ends up being corrupted. Also, any streaming media I play gets "cut off". For example, Youtube videos stop dead in the middle, even though the streaming bar appears to continue and finish loading the video. I believe the two problems are related, and it's preventing me from downloading ANYTHING. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Using IE? If so, try Firefox, and see, if same thing will happen.
Are you using any 3rd party Download Manager?
What type of internet connection do you have? What Windows version?

I'm already using Firefox, and the problem still occurs if I use IE. I'm running Windows XP and I am not using a 3rd Party Download Manager. Right now, I'm on Comcast cable internet. My two other housemates don't have this problem even though we are connected to the same router.

Do you have windows updates on ?
If no check for latest updates from control panel , also put all your internet settings on default , then clear all your history, temp files and then try You Tube.
Note -to update windows you need an orignal OS .

Try to run TCP Optimizer from here:

I ran the TCP Optimizer, and after restarting my computer, Youtube videos are working fine. I'll test a few downloads to see if things are working properly now.

The easiest way is to just let it make changes.
When you open main window, "General" tab is displayed. You'll see a checkmark in "Current Settings". This is what you have right now.
Put a checkmark into "Optimal Settings", and you'll see changes to some values in different boxes. Just don't worry about it.
Click on "Apply changes", and you are done.
        Click "Exit".
I don't remember, but it may ask you to close your browsers before applying changes, and maybe restart your computer.
        Just comply.

          Reviving my own thread...

Okay, so downloads worked fine for a couple of days after I first ran the TCP Optimizer, but the problem has arisen again. Since then, I've only installed The Orange Box and the Steam, the online service used to play the games. I've tried uninstalling the game and Steam and running the TCP Optimizer, but the problem still persists. Any ideas?

Try running CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ to make sure, you don't have any registry leftovers from those two programs.
You uninstalled them through Add/Remove, right?

Yes, I uninstalled The Orange Box and Steam through Add/Remove. I ran the CC Cleaner and it helps a little bit. (Youtube videos last longer before they cut out)

By the way, I really appreciate your help Broni (and others), thank you.

Hey, no problem. Glad to help whenever  I can 8) 8) 8)
I'd run couple more registry cleaners, because usually single one will always miss something.
            Try:
            - Eusing Registry Cleaner: http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
            - Wise Registry Cleaner: http://www.download.com/3000-2086_4-10724716.html
