A HDD issue, maybe a simple one
« on: October 27, 2007, 12:28:37 PM »
Ok, i have just had a new computer build for me, and it had a brand new harddrive put in it.  After install windows xp home, about half of the space of the harddrive was some how already used or not aviable.  It is a 250gb, windows reads it as 233gbs, and after installing windows, it showed about 125gb avaible w/ out installing other programs.  Any idea on what is up?  I know that windows xp wont take up 100+gbs after install, and even going through the hdd, i cant find where the 100gbs went?  Any help would be nice.

If it helps, here are my specs:
Mobo: P5N32-E SLI Plus
CPU: Intel E6750 2.66 duo
Ram: 2gb of OCZ DDR2 1000
Video: Geforce 8600 GTS
HDD: Matrox 250gb

How much space is Windows assigning to Virtual memory?  To find this, right click on My Computer, select Properties, select the Advanced tab, select Settings (under Performance), select the Advanced tab, and look for Virtual memory at bottom of that panel.

You might download CCleaner and run it.  I suggest go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds and download the Slim version.  It's a good disk cleanup utility and registry cleaner.  Even though it may seem odd to run a disk cleanup utility right after a fresh installation of Windows, I'm wondering whether you have a lot of temporary files that accumulated for some reason.  CCleaner will find them.  Tell CCleaner to remove what it finds.  If you run the registry scan, it will prompt you to backup your registry before proceeding, and it's a good idea to do that.

BTW, did you partition your hard drive?  When you open My Computer, how many drives do you see there?  Windows will show separate partitions on one physical hard drive as separate hard drives.

its my desktop taking most of the disk space
Are you talking about upper pane, or lower pane?
In upper pane, whenever you double click on any folder, it'll expand, showing subfolders sizes, and so on.

Updates have nothing to do with not seeing full size of your hard drive.

It is a 250gb, windows reads it as 233gb
As you can see from my link, this is EXACTLY, what Windows will show.

What is "King of the Castle" with almost 50 GB?
