1GB Kingston Flash Drive for Under a Buck
« on: October 31, 2007, 07:11:20 PM »
I can't say, if it still works, but...

That's right. You can get a Kingston 1GB USB flash drive from Buy.com for under a buck--or depending on where you live, absolutely free. (As I write this newsletter, the drive's still available. But your mileage may vary.)

My buddy, Suzanne M., spotted this gem in one of her freebie group newsletters last week. She bought one and paid 92 cents (Tennessee tax). I got mine for 72 cents (California tax). In fact, I got two.

And listen, if you don't move on this--like right now--you're going to miss out. You just know they're going to run out quickly and I don't want to hear your kvetching.

Here's the scoop:

   1. Head for Buy.com.
   2. Add one Kingston flash drive to your cart.
   3. At the Checkout page, click on the Google checkout option to get the $10 discount.
   4. Make sure you choose budget shipping--which is free.

Yes, they did run out. However, they got it back in stock. I ordered mine on the 19th and it's on it's way to me.

Being a Kingston product, I'd bet the quality is good.  I'm using Kingston memory in my desktop computer; been using it for several years now.

I just ordered one of those flash drives, using the Google checkout option to get the $10 discount.

The one thing I liked about the flash disk, and CD, was not nessasairy the storage, but the fact that it didnt take so long to copy stuff. Actually, floppies were the number one way me and my cousin kept our computer adware trojans in sync...

I didnt start using alternative storage methods for floppies until two years ago. I purchased a 37MB flash drive from Staples for $7.43, and looking at it now, its a bit depressing, yet, still incredibly useful. Now I have a 2GB CruizerMicro Flash device from Sandisk. It works great.
Now flash drive transfer speed is annoying me.

        I prefer floppy disk too.

The reason I'm hitting the blogosphere to complain about it now, and not the begining of the week when it was announced. is that as I type, I'm occasionally Alt+Tab'ing for Firefox to Windows Explorer and Windows search in attempts to scurry together any backup copies of the data that was stored on 'Ramza VII', the 4th USB drive I've owned thats bitten the dust, this time it's been a device malfunction. Previous problems have been:

            * faulty connection,
            * repeated removal without shutting down beforehand (despite the fact that USB boasts a hot swapping ability)
            * an electrical spike from a USB port that fried the circuits
            * a device being overloaded because it was a USB 2.0 port but a 1.1 device.
From: Finally, A Blog That Doesnt Suck

USB sticks have a large storage capacity, but I still prefer floppy disk.

Haven't received it yet but, keep in mind, part of the deal to get this item at the lowest cost was also accepting second-class shipping.  So, I'm not really expecting it to arrive for a few more days or longer.

It went well.  By using the Google checkout feature, which resulted in a $10 discount which totally offset the $10 price, I saw no transaction whatsoever on my credit card acct for this.  And, again, to get it totally free, the lowest cost shipping option must be selected; otherwise, a fee for shipping would be applied.

        Edit:
After reading some reviews about their site, I might back off a bit.
Though most of the users are complete idiots who dont understand the concept of "free shipping" (obviously, FREE means SLOW, DUH)
It seems that a majority of the valid complaints have to do with:
Buy.com 's failure to cancel order
        Bad customer support

Finally got mine today. Had to laugh though. It came in a envelope that was 16" x 11". Inside the envelope was a hard plastic package measuring 7" x 4" that contained the drive itself which measured all of 2¼" x ⅝".

            Can't beat the price, $10 - $10 Google discount + zero tax (NY) = $0.

Ordered and received mine as well (same huge envelope) - took about 10 days, $0 in charges.

the only downside is that buy.com likes to send you email, not a whole lot, maybe 1 a day or so, to your gmail account.  Not that big a deal but shoudl be noted.
