$NTUninstaller Folders
« on: November 04, 2007, 12:53:40 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Running Windows XP SP2 on my computer.

I have two questions:

1 ) What are the $NTUninstaller folders in my computer's Windows directory?
2 ) Can I delete them without affecting my system?

Thank you  ;)

$NTUninstallers are the uninstallers to the MS Updates. Security patches and such. They can be removed. I would only recommend doing this if the machine has been running fine for a while after all the latest updates. Once they are removed there is no getting them back.

CCleaner has a setting that will remove them. Under the Advanced settings check the Hotfix Uninstallers and they will be removed.

Personally, I think it's best to backup these files to a CD before removing them.  But so far, I've never had any problems.  Things can still go wrong, though.

This is how i handle updates but as always Your Mileage May Vary:

I do not use Automatic Updates.
I wait at least 2 weeks after each Patch Tuesday before i install any patches.
In that time period i check the Forums i belong to for any complaints/issues with the latest patches.
After that i manually install only the ones that have no issues. I leave them on my system for about another 2 weeks just to make sure.

At that point i move them to an $NTUninstall$ folder on a seperate partition. When that folder reaches CD size i burn them for backups and delete them...
