untrue warnings about low disk space
« on: November 08, 2007, 06:28:55 AM »
help! my harddisk has 73 gb of disk space.

recently, my computer's been warning me about low disk space on that harddisk, which is untrue. it said that there was only a few mb of space left. however, even after clearing a few gigs of space, it still remained as a few mb of free space. i tried rebooting, but it didn't help.

i went to manually check out my files, and they amount to around 40 gb.

why is my computer reading the harddisk as having low disk space when there should be around 30gigs of free space!?

please help someone! :(

Welcome to ComputerHope keiray,

What OS are you using? protectioni etc?

Also, is your hard drive partitioned at all?

Eventually, if you're sure, it's a fake warning, it may be easily disabled in registry.

Run checkdisk and scan for hard drive errors.

This will take a long time to run.

My money is on a bad hard drive.

Open My computer and right click on your C drive and choose properties. This will tell you exactly how much free disk space you have. If it is indeed, that low, you will have to shedding some files and programs or add another drive.

There are some things you can try. Disable indexing service (permanently). Temporarly disable systore. You can re-enable it after a roboot. Clear your temp internet files, cache, history and cookies. clear your temp folder and remove the contents of prefetch folder. You may need to show hidden and system files to find them all.
