trojan can't be deleted, cleaned or quarantined?
« on: November 10, 2007, 02:24:56 PM »
okay, so i have mcaffe virus protection, or whatever you call it. i got a popup saying that the trojan "PWS-Gamania.gen" was found. so i tried to delete, clean and quarantine it, but it told be none of them could be done. then i tried to open mozilla firefox, so i could see what i could do, but it wouldn't let me, and that box about the trojan was blocking the entire screen, and wouldn't minimize, so i x-ed it out. so now i lost the location information on it. i believe it was in a temporary folder, but i have no clue what that even means (i'm basically a moron when it comes to computers). i'm running a scan right now, so i can find the trojan again, but it might take a while. also, i need to know what to do since i can't delete it or anything. i know this has happened to me before (getting a virus/trojan which couldn't be deleted, cleaned or quarantined), but i don't remember what i did to get rid of it. if anyone could help, i'd appreciate it a lot. oh, and also i think the trojan is affecting my firefox, because it won't open. so i had to resort to ie for the time being. please let me know what to do. thanks in advance

thanks. :)
i'm not sure if i did the right thing, but it was 'driver agent' or something.
well, when i did that, all of the checks were in the good section, and none in the bad. i don't think i did the right thing though. hah

First of all, right after we clean your computer, you're gonna go ahead, and get Service Pack 2 for Windows.
You'll also make sure all your Windows updates are current, OK?

Now...

1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

2. Download, and install Spybot (if you don't have it) from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

3. Close all windows, except for HJT.

3a. Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove, and uninstall Viewpoint Manager (if in the list of programs)

4. Put a checkmark next to following HJT entries:

- C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2124d7e5-a143-46bd-aa81-e3a26043f5cf} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdbar.dll (file missing)

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4A25D449-2BAA-4426-A992-D18CA70CF5A9} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\e23cy5g.dll (file missing)

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7A1693A1-AFAF-4F1E-9B05-EEC38A85FBF3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\knu9rj.dll (file missing)

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe" /startup "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0500.dll"

- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Regscan] C:\WINDOWS\System32\regscan.exe

- O9 - Extra button: The Weather Channel - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - (no file)

- O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: The Weather Channel - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - (no file)

- O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

- O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkli - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkli.dll (file missing)

- O20 - Winlogon Notify: kbdbar - kbdbar.dll (file missing)

5. Click on "Fix It" button.

6. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (F8)

7. Run Spybot (click on updates, first), and fix whatever it asks you to fix.

8. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options, put a checkmark next to "Show hidden files, and folders".

9. Delete following files (if they still exist):

- Viewpoint folder from C:\Program Files\

- knu9rj.dll, e23cy5g.dll, kbdbar.dll, regscan.exe files from C:\WINDOWS\system32\

- WildTangent folder from C:\Program Files\

10. Turn off System Restore.

11. Restart in Normal Mode.

12. Turn System Restore on.

13. Run HJT again, and post back its log back here.

okay, so i did everything up to restarting. well, i restarted, but didn't know what safe mode was, and nothing happened when i pressed f8.
well my firefox works now, so i don't know if i should even move on with the steps.
if i should, let me know. and also, (being stupid me) i don't know how to get to windows explorer. haah i don't even know what that is. well, anyways...
thanks for the help, and it might be a while before i respond, as i have to go eat.

It doesn't work this way around here. You have to follow all steps, or no help.
If you don't know what to do at some point, just ask.

We'll start with restarting in Safe Mode. When your computer restarts, keep tapping (not pressing) F8 key. At some point, you'll be presented with few choices on black screen. Pick option #1 - Safe Mode. Hit Enter.
When there, follow my previous instructions.

Windows Explorer is like My Computer. To get there go Start>Run, type in:
explorer
Hit Enter.
Windows Explorer will open.

Print the above out

Much better, but we still have one bad guy: TALEX TROJAN
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Regscan] C:\WINDOWS\System32\regscan.exe

Restart in Safe Mode (now, you know how...LOL).
Go Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Hit Enter.

Registry Editor will open.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In right pane, you'll see:
RegScan %Windir%\Regscan.exe
or similar combination.
Right click on it, click Delete
Close Registry Editor.

Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\
Check if file:
regscan.exe
exist.
If yes, delete.
If not, close Windows Explorer.

Restart computer, post new HJT log.

Print the above out.

alright, so i got into safe mode, went to registry editor, and when i went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, the only thing in the right pane was (Default) and under type it said REG_SZ. I tried to delete it anyways, but when i tried, it said "Unable to delete all specified values."
So I wasn't sure what to do next so i just got back to normal mode. Hah. What should i do now?

I tried to delete it anyways
NEVER, EVER do anything, what you were not told to do, ESPECIALLY in Registry!!!

Now...
I said, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You do this, in exact same way, as in Windows Explorer.
In this case, you click on a "+" sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
Then, you'll see SOFTWARE folder. Click on a "+" sign next to it.
Now, you'll see Microsoft folder. Click on a "+" sign next to it.
...and so on, until you reach Run folder.
Make sure, it's highlighted (if it's not, just left click on it - ONCE).
Now look in right pane to see an entry, you're suppose to delete:
RegScan %Windir%\Regscan.exe

PLEASE, DON'T delete anything else. If entry is not there, write down what entries ARE there, and post back.

We killed together quiet a few suckers.

Now, it's time for you to install Windows Service Pack 2, stay away from troubles, and report, that your computer is working fine.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall Java jre1.5.0_10

Then visit www.java.com to download the latest version jre1.6.0_3

Outdated Java is an entry point for malware.

I woulds also suggest having a look at this article by Tony Klein So how did I get infected in the first place?

Updates can be downloaded at www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

First though, since you don't have SP2 I would strongly advise to run an online virus scan to be 100% sure there are no virus on the computer. If there is this can cause big problems.

Use the ESET online scan http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/index.php

If anything is found post the log from the scan found in C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

After getting the windows updates get the Java and delete everything but jre1.6.0_3 (Java (JRE) 6 update 3)

As long, as you follow instructions, not your imagination (LOL), especially with registry, I'll be fine ;D ;D ;D
