cd drive and dvd drive are gone
« on: November 10, 2007, 02:28:51 PM »
I have a Dell running widows xp. a couple days ago i lost my cd & dvd. I check the computer to see the devices and they both had a yellow mark. It said that Windows could not load the device for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39) ????  I don't know where to go or what to do. PLEASE HELP

Thanx Gary

Using Device Manager, uninstall both, and restart Windows. Hopefully, Windows will find them again.

I did what you said to do. I forgot to tell you that when computer starts up I get "Privoxy Error" (00000538) Fatal Error: the date and time then it says Can't check configuration file 'config.txt.' error #2. Does that tell you more.

Sorry I didn't mention that.

And? No change?

You mean "Proxy Error" (00000538)?

Unless my eyes are bad I 'm sure it was privoxy error. I would have to restart the computer to make sure. Evidently Privoxy error isn't correct?

I looked up privoxy on the internet and it has to do with computers, but it is way over my head..

Can you double check, by restarting your computer. Also, watch that error number, if it's gonna be the same, or different.

Your two problems may be unrelated, but let's start with first one.

Have you ever installed Privoxy:
http://www.privoxy.org/
Quote
Privoxy is a web proxy  with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, modifying web page data, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk.

If not, go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove, and see, if it's listed there.
If it is, uninstall it.
If it's not listed, see, if it's listed in Program Files folder.

Post back with your findings.

What happened prior to this? Were ANY changes made to software or hardware? Could you do a system restore to BEFORE this started?

A first place to start would be to remove and reseat the cables inside the case and look for other problems.

In Control Panel/System/Device Manager are there issues with either the drives OR the controller noted?

There were no changes made to software or hardware. I have tried system restore only to be told that I can't restore to that date. I haven't opened up the case yet. I will check Device manager and let you know.

After checking the device manager for both it says that Windows can't load device drivers for this hardware. Driver may be corrupted or missing code 39.

It's stupid, fake Windows message. In Windows XP, you don't need any optical drive drivers.
What about my questions?

I have never installed Privoxy. I could not find it under add or remove and I'm not sure how to get to Program files folder.I have never heard of Privoxy until this happened. Sorry that I'm not as computer smart as you .

I have opened the computer case. Everything inside looks allright to me. No loose cables or pinched wires. I started up the computer and still had the corrupted files or missing code 39 for both the cd&dvd drives. So I uninstalled both then restarted the computer only to have the same messages.

I finally found Privoxy on my computer and have deleted it. Still don't know where it came from.

Good...
For the future reference, if you don't find a program in Add/remove, open Windows Explorer, go to Program Files, find program's folder, and inside that folder look for a file similar to: uninstall.exe, unstall.exe, or unwise.exe. It may also have a description of uninstallation file.
If you find such a file, double click on it to begin uninstallation.
If none of those solutions work, you just have to remove program's folder, and run some cleaner, like CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ to remove program's leftovers.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123      Shows all the different codes and how to resolve the problems. Took about 2-3 minutes to get done.
