graphic card and mobo compatable

Hi guys need help with an issue over graphic card, at present i have an nvideagforce 6500 tried to upgrade to ati radeon 9600xt, and all goes well till boot up gets as far as screen coming on then goes black.
question is does anyone know if this card is compatable with my motherboard ??
details of computer is

939turbo amd athlon 64 proccessor 3500+2.2ghz 1gb ram
i am running win xp home sp2
the card slot is pci express slot 16 lane
I am not very techy so i hope you can understand what i have put down ! :-\

How can we tell if it's compatible without knowing what MBoard we're talking about ? ?

Both the old card and the new one are PCI Express cards, right?

Well, we need clarification on this point.  Is the gforce 6500 a physical card that you removed before you installed the new video card?

But when troubleshooting problems too much info on the machine, components and OS is better than not enough.

If you change your GFX card from a Nvidia to an ATI, the drivers will conflict, this may be your problem?

Try putting your old card in, uninstalling the drivers and then changing cards...
