    Laptop will not play DVD's
    « on: November 15, 2007, 11:44:11 AM »
    Hi Guys and girls,

I'm having trouble with my laptop and wondered if you could at all help, the problem is my laptop is not playing DVDs, it streams youtube etc fine but when it comes to DVDs they just wont play.  The CD drive works fine (the CD drive recognises the CD) and i have tried playing the DVDs on media player and real player to no avail.  I keep getting a message "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder" etc but when i try to fix it with the software they recommend there is a charge involved!  I do not understand this as my laptop use to play DVDs fine with no problems.
Please can you knowledgable guys and gals help
    Kind regards

There should be some software for a DVD decoder on a drivers CD that came with the LT. You can also visit your manufactures website to obtain the software.

How is the drive showing up in Device Manager ? ?
If it used to play them but now won't it may not be missing codecs.
What type of DVD's...DLoads that were burned or Factory ones ? ? ?

Region 1 is for US, and Canada, Region 2 for Europe, and Japan.

To change your region settings from 2 to 1, open My Computer".
Right click on your DVD drive, click "Properties".
Click "Hardware" tab. Click on your DVD drive in scroll-down list.
                Click "Properties" button.
                Click "DVD Region" tab.
You'll see "Current Region". In your case, it'll display "Region 2".
In "New Region" field, type in "Region 1".
                Click OK. Done.

Warning! Don't play with changing regions, too much, because it's limited to FIVE changes only. After that, you're stuck on whatever last region was!

                Try to:
                1. Remove DVD, put it back.
                2. Restart Windows Media Player.
                3. Restart computer (DVD out).

Before you do that, get VLC player: http://filehippo.com/download_vlc/
                  and see, if it'll work.

You may need to roll back to ver. 10, especially if you're running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004.

This means the movies no matter where they came from are copyright protected and any tweaking of WMP or other player is not going to get around it.

                            Welcome to DRM.
