Does "HD" monitor need specific graphics card?

a guy asked me a valid question tonight about high def monitors.  Do you need a HD-compatible video card to reap the benefits of a HD monitor?  You know in the same way you need high definition cable and HDMI to get it on your TV?

Yes. You need a card that supports it and has a connection to output to it.
