    Trouble with DVD drive;
         Not every time, but a lot of the time when I "Eject" a disc from my DVD drive my computer will immediately do a "Restart" This can't be good. I am using a very good HP computer with windows XP. Any ideas please?  :'(

    Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...
    Uncheck"auto restart on errors"...
    Save the changes and exit.
    Re-boot.
    Now you will get a BSOD instead of a restart next time...write down the entire error message and post it here.

      The computer finally crashed this morning ( I haven't been using it that much)
      This is the message I get:

        " A problem has been detected and windows has shut down. To prevent damage to your computer

      RDR-FILE;-SYSTEM
          Check any newly installed hardware ....etc....(no new hardware){My words}

      Beginning dump of  physical memory
         physical memory dump complete."

      At this point the computer  was froze, So I was unable to "cut and paste," I hope I have copied everything correctly.

      Thank you for any advice you might give me...

        Reading some posts, it may be Norton related. Do you have anything from Symantec installed?
        How long ago did it start?

          I don't think that his problem seeing as I get it too and I don't run Norton.  It just happens from time to time.

            Thank you for your reply.
             No, I don't have Norton installed, I replaced Norton with Mcafee about a year ago..The only  thing I do have installed along this line are Mcafee, Stopzilla(great program) and Wedroot Spy Sweeper.
              I made the "restore" disc when I first got the computer a couple of years ago BUT I just don't have the nerve to try a "Restore"  :'(
            Thanks a lot

            How much RAM is installed in this machine ? ?
            Also what OS is it ? ?

            MS seems to indicate this is a memory problem so post back with as much info on the machine and OS and we can go from there...

              I'm not talking about your Restore disk, I'm talking about Windows built-in System Restore.

              One thing you can try is replacing the IDE cable for the CD/DVD drives...they do go bad. But i don't think it's this...
              Remember to remove all power when working inside the case.
              In the meantime i would also DLoad and run MemTest to test that RAM...any errors are bad and mean it will need replaced.
              Let the test run for a few hours.

              I was just looking a bit and saw that you replaced Norton with McAffee. I recommend doing a deeper check into the Program Files folder and MSconfig because even after uninstalling norton...it leaves remnants. Most of them bear symantec in thier name...bear that in mind when searching for them.

              After you are sure you got every last trace...use a registry cleaner.

              This had solved my DVD drive problem once before.
