Google Earth - hundreds of lines
« on: January 01, 2008, 10:21:25 AM »
I'm new here, if I'm not in the correct forum, please forgive.  I have a laptop that since I downloaded the "new & improved" Google Earth, has lost it's mind.  No other program seems to be affected.  G.E. however now has hundreds of lines all over the image.  I've done a restore to a previous date, no help; I uninstalled/removed it and re-installed, no help; I have tried to download an old copy/version of the former "good" Google Earth that had no issues, but can't find one on-line.  I've had the laptop for about 1 yr.  It's a Sony Vaio.  I start it with the 'safe' mode and also the X something or other rather than the deafult.  I also cleared the cashe.  I'm sure you computer guru's will probably know what I'm talking about.  Anywho, other searches I've done suggests a possible device driver.  I'm thinking that's a chip on the motherboard or something.  I'm confused and frustrated.  Any suggestions.  Thank you so much!

Post your system specs...GE has some pretty heavy duty requirements...

Go Start>Run, type in:
devmgmt.msc
Click OK.
Click "+" sign next to Display Adapters, and post what you have there.

RADEON IGP 345 M comes with 64MB or 128MB of RAM. If it's 64MB, it may be a problem.
Let's find out first about that.
Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In right pane look at Display>Video Adapter
What does it say?

I accessed that web page, but it doesn't seem to show a button or link for me to download that freeware any longer... am I having a brain freeze or am I completely blind?  I tried to google it to get it elsewhere, but no results...  In a couple of places I read the message stating Lavalys has discontinued this free edition.  This is unsupported.  Aargh  Any thoughts?  And again, thank you so very much for your time and help.

Follow that link, and right in the middle of the page it says "Free downloads from:". Pick any one of those links.

It may be your problem.
Google says:
Quote
We recommend any graphics card with at least 32 MB of Video RAM and 3D-graphics rendering capabilities.
However, if you would like to use Google Earth for more advanced features like movie making or using multiple overlays, a graphics card with at least 64 MB of virtual ram or above is suggested.
Translated to plain English:
at least 64 MB = barely runs

OK, so do I need to buy more of this MB stuff and can I get it online?   ;D
Why do I need it now, and not for the past year...?  because of the new download?
Thanks for all your help - I would have been bald in less than a week for pulling my hair out!

do I need to buy more of this MB stuff
What you have is on-board video chip, which even doesn't have its own memory (RAM). It borrows 64MB of RAM from your computer RAM.
What you need is separate video card, with 256MB-512MB of RAM. You can get 512MB for ~$100.

Most likely, prevous version wasn't that RAM hungry.
