monitor died after installing game
« on: January 05, 2008, 05:13:19 PM »
Hi. I have windows 2000. My nephew installed a computer game & the monitor went black.  ??? We checked to make sure that the mouse was working. I had another monitor which we tried - still got a black screen.

Do I need a new driver or video card? I am not real computer literate.

Thank you,

homer

    what was the game?
    what are the computers specs?

it sounds like a video card problem. we need to know what the video card is.

The game was Howard Marks Video Casino Games. My computer is Asus / windows 2000. I can't give you any computer specs because I can't view anything on the monitor. I have 2 hard drives and a lot of memory. But, despite having lots of memory, I have always gotten messages that I'm low on virtual memory & the computer is increasing the size of virtual memory. The monitor light is green when 1st turned in, then turns to orange. I can hear my computer running.

can you enter windows in safe mode? ( hold down F8 to enter safe mode)

if you cannot enter into safe mode, then the problem is most likely caused by a faulty video card. are your graphics integrated or non-integrated?*

      * below is a pic to determine if your graphics card is integrated or not. tell me which rectangle your monitor is plugged into, the red one or the green one.

No. I cannot enter into safe mode. I could not begin to tell you if my video card is integrated or non-integrated. LOL, I can't even tell you where it is located or what it looks like!

Yes, but follow your monitor's cable to the back of the computer. Does it got to the area marked by the green box or the red box?

The monitor cable goes to the green box.

Don't know how much it matters, but I looked at the monitor again & when I turn it on the color of the power button is not green. It is kind of orange-yellow & stays that color. I get no windows screen or anything what-so-ever. The tower sounds the same as it always has. My monitor started acting up a few years ago. The screen would do a little blip every now & then & my side margins started changing. So, when the monitor went dark, I assumed my monitor had died. But when we hooked up the old monitor I still had the same problem - all dark.

that means its in standby mode, that it is not receiving a signal from your graphics card.

if your monitor plugs into the green area then you have integrated graphics.

in light of this new information, it seems as though your motherboard has had it. you will need to purchase a new motherboard.

What exactly is a motherboard? Is it something I can buy & install myself? Or is it best left up to someone who knows what they are doing? Seems to me that my old computer guy replaced my motherboard once before.

you MIGHT be able to get away with only purchasing a new video card, but my thinking is if there is one thing wrong with the motherboard, how do we know that  there are not other things wrong with it, and how will one failed device on the motherboard affect its other devices?

this is a motherboard. it is what every device in your computer hooks up to. they come in many different shapes, sizes, makes, and models.

you can buy and install it yourself, but based on your first question, i would strongly recommend letting someone else buy and install it.

            on the same machine?
