    No Sound
    « on: January 10, 2008, 09:00:52 PM »
All of a sudden tonight my sound is gone!  All the connections are okay but for some reason I have no sound.  I have Windows XP.  Anyone have any ideas?

    Click on Start | Run
Type in devmgmt.msc and click OK.
Click on the '+' next to Sound, video and game controllers and look for any devices that have a '!' or 'X' next to them. Do any devices have a '!' or 'X' next to them? Are there any devices there?

They are all there and none of them have a ! or x next to them.  It looks kind of like a speaker (?) next to each one.

OK, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers?
      What drivers are there?

I just went to my computer help and support page.  This is what is said after I entered....so sound.

Are your volume settings adjusted to an audible level?
Your volume might be set too low, or audio might be muted.

          To check your volume settings

          Open Volume Control.
Make sure that Mute all is not selected, and adjust the volume and balance controls to the levels you prefer.
The controls in Volume Control are different for different sound devices. If any Mute check boxes except microphone input are checked, this might be the cause of your problem. Consult your sound device documentation or contact the manufacturer for more information.

WELL LO AND BEHOLD "MUTE ALL" WAS CHECKED!!!  Why I don't know but I unchecked it and now I have sound.  Why would that all of sudden be checked????

That has to be the most embarrassing thing ever, trying to reinstall drivers when in fact all you needed to do was simply untick a box.

Does your computer have a button that toggles the "Mute All"? You could have accidently pressed that.

I swear dairyman I have never seen a button that toggles the "Mute All" so how this ever happened is a mystery to me.

Thanks for the advice.  Maybe sometimes we need to keep things more simple rather than complex.  I'm just happy I have sound again.

            Peace.
