I have a laptop about 3 yrs old with Windows XP.  I contacted my dsl provider and after running some tests was told that my netword card  was not connecting with my modem or that i might have a software problem.  What can cause my network card not to work?  I recently took my laptop in for a cleanup of viruses.

You could try physically removing the card and re-installing it and it's drivers...
