Problem with iTunes
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:50:19 PM »
I had iTunes working fine in my laptop, and then I decided to save space and screwed everything up. I have two hard drives, one in which has nothing at all on it. So I decided to move my music folder to that hard drive and just use that for music. The next time I tried to click on itunes it says "the folder itunes cannot be found or created and is required. the default location for this folder is inside the music folder." I've tried uninstalling and installing itunes but nothing works. I've tried moving my music folder back to where it was, with the rest of the default folders that say picture and documents and video but either I'm not doing it right or I can't. I can't get itunes to work to save my life. Any ideas? thanks

by the way I'm using Vista on my Acer laptop

Not at all. It'll return your registry settings to a date from before changes (if available).
Go Start, type in:
rstrui
Hit Enter.
System Restore window will open.
Follow steps.

It didn't work. It said that it failed and I should try and system restore from a different point. It recommends a time about two hours ago but that is when the whole ordeal started. any other ideas?

Try to uninstall iTunes, following directions from here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
Then, reinstall.

Is there not a way to change the path for the directory of your music folder within iTunes options?

That would be easier.

However, the default location for your music folder should be C:\Documents and Settings\<Your name>\My Documents\My Music.

If you move it back to there it should be ok.

Navigate to My Computer > C:\ (the HD where itunes is installed) > Documents and settings > *your name* > My Documents.

Inside My Documents, you should have a 'My Music' folder (but I think this is the one you moved). If it's not there, create one (called 'my music'). Inside that folder, creat another folder called 'itunes'.

This may atleast let you get into itunes to change the location of your music library.

after i go to my computer, c drive, there is not a section that says documetns and settings anywhere...

originally the file wasnt under my documents. it was just under this thing with my name and it had a list that said things such as
contacts
desktop
downloads
links
pictures
videos
documents
favorites

and tahts where it said music and if i selected it and it had itunes music and sample music in there. now i was an idiot and moved the folder

Ok I see that you're using Vista, sorry.

Try creating a music folder in the same place where you see

contacts
desktop
downloads
links
pictures
videos
documents
favorites

And in that folder create an itunes one

I tried.... it says the same thing.

all those folders i mentioned are blue and have a little picture on them. when i try and create one its just a normal brown one. idk if this means anything just mentioning it.

And you've tried to move the original music folder back to this location aswell?

Did it not move back to it's original state? (a blue folder with a picture on it)

you know its kind of weird. I moved the music folder to the d drive. but when i click on the d drive it just has the contents of the folder. its like when i moved it it deleted the folder but moved the contents.

That is weird. You should probably look into replacing this folder but if you don't plan to use it anyway it shouldn't be vital, but bare in mind that most music related software applications will look to this folder by default for it's library or output for ripping etc so you'll need to change settings in other applications when installing etc.

You could try to reinstall itunes to your second HD.

Create a folder on your second HD & move your music to it (don't put any itunes folders or anything, just music).

Uninstall itunes from your system & reinstall it onto your second HD.

Worth a shot...

that would work perfect but i cant find the main music folder. and if i just create a folder called music it doesnt have the same properties as the original. i did notice though on the left side of my folders, it lists all the folders i have such as documents and video and stuf like that, and there is a music folder, and instead of a blue folder it has a harddrive image on it. if i try and right click on it and do the steps you sent me it doesnt have it either.
