Help..Please
« on: January 19, 2008, 05:21:22 PM »
I'm on a very slow dial up.  Yes ancient I know.  Recently a friend of mine told me that my computer was terribly slow and that he could make it faster.  Me being totally trusting in him let him on my computer and watched him change a few things in the settings that "made it faster".  Ofcourse I don't know what he did but now for some odd reason my computer won't let me log into sites like my email for example.  I know it's not the connection because a friend of mine came over and connected using my phone line with her lap top and I could access my email.  It's the computer.  If anyone has any ideas that I could try out I'd be thrilled to hear from you.

Ask your friend to undo whatever he did.
If he can't we'll need to know more about your computer.
    Version of windows,
    What your friend did,
    What browser you're using.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Yeah I tried System Restore.  I'm using Firefox and I've tried to redownload it but it keeps doing the same thing.  I've also used IE to see if it was just the browser but Explorer does the same exact thing.  I can't ask him to undo whatever he did because he's a turd.

I can't log into Yahoo mail or facebook.  I haven't tried any of my other email but I will.  It's odd because when I log into yahoo messenger I can click on mail and I can check it.  But I can't just log into my mail from the website.  I'm using Firefox but IE is doing the same thing.  And I'm usuing Windows XP.

did he, for some reason, put you under a proxy?

to check, goto "tools" in firefox, then "options", then the "advanced" tab, then the smaller "network" tab then select "settings". "direct connection to the internet" should be selected.

Yeah there is, it's the second one. If you don't have it you're probably using an old version of firefox. Go to help>about mozilla firefox and post the version it shows.

I'm using Version 1.5.0.4.   It has asked me to upgrade and I did.  But after I upgraded then every page I tried to go to ended up with that error thing.  So I just stayed with teh old version.  Some usage is better than no usage. :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
